JR. SPARKPLUGS 40 GREENWOOD 19 On Monday evening, October 9th, the Speedway Jr. Sparkplugs traveled to Greenwood in hopes of extending their undefeated string to five games. This was a big game for the Jr. Plugs, as Speedway had never defeated Greenwood on their home ground. The Woodmen won the toss and elected to receive. On the first series of plays, the Greenwood fullbacks ran around left end to post the first score of the contest. The attempted conversion was stopped and the home team led 6-0. Not to be outdone, the Plugs, after receiving the ensuing kickoff, marched right down the field, with Mike Short scampering around left end, to tie the score at 6-6. Dave Schnable plunged over from the two-yard line to give Speedway a 7-6 lead. The Sparkplug defense tightened up the remainder of the quarter while the Plugs offense continued to click, scoring again on a fiveyard run by Kenny Craig. He also scored the PAT, and the quarter ended 14-6, Speedway. The only score of the second quarter was that of Speedway, with Dale Amich speeding 43 yards around end on a breath-taking run. Schnable booted the PAT, and the half ended 21-6. Speedway’s defense again in the third quarter held the home team scoreless. Mike Short flipped a 13-yard pass to Dave Schnable for the fourth Speedway TD, but his kick for the PAT went wide, giving the Plugs a 27-6 lead. The offense was wide open for both clubs in the fourth quarter, as each team scored twice. Paul Parks snagged a Short aerial and raced 43 yards for the score. Kenny Craig plunged 2

yards for the last Jr. Plug TD, and Dave Schnable kicked one of two PAT’s to give the visitors their 40 point total. Greenwood scored on the ground and made one of two conversion attempts for their 19 points. It should be noted that the potent Plug offense scored six touchdowns with five different boys hitting paydirt. Dave Schnable kicked two extra points out of four attempts, once again showing prowess with his educated toe. Dave is one of the very few Bth grade boys in organized football with the ability to kick extra points. Speedway has now won all five of their games, with only Fulton Jr. High, tonight’s opponent, challenging an undefeated season. Let’s everyone cheer the Jr. Plugs on to victory this evening at the High School field at 6:30 p.m. The boys deserve your full support.
