MEDICAL BRIEFS Guilty!—ln the first case of its kind, a jury agreed that a man’s fatal lung cancer was due to his smoking two packs of cigarettes a day for thirty years. After deliberating nine horns, during which time seven members of the jury repeatedly sent out for cigarettes, the jury held the cigarette company was not to blame. Blow Your Top—According to a study made by Chicago’s Dr. Donald Oken, people who suppress anger have higher blood pressure than those who express their rage vocally and physically. Some Combination! —If you’re taking a tranquilizer, and you just must have a drink, stay out of the driver’s seat. Research indicates that the tranquilizer increases the effect of the alcohol, and the two together seriously interfere with coordination and judgement. Down to Drain—You’re throwing your money away if you buy vitamin pills without doctor’s orders. So says the American Medical Association. The average person doesn’t need extra vitamins, but gets his requirements in his food. Overdosage with Vitamins A and D can lead to real trouble. It will cost you less to go to your doctor if you don’t feel right than to buy a couple of months’ supply of vitamins.

Power Loss—Something You Can Do About It If you fall flat in mid-morning like a sour note from a shortwinded tuba player, you, like he, are suffering from power loss. You give an off-key performance. Have a weak fortissimo. And uneasy breathing in the works. Your power loss can come from too little breakfast or too much. So concluded two scientists at the State University of lowa who studied the reactions of junior high school boys, oldsters, and college men and women. Too much breakfast and their subjects all felt sluggish. Too little, and they could not work up to ability. The ideal breakfast, they found, supplied about one-fourth of the calories needed each day. You accomplish most—and feel like doing it—if you have your first meal within minutes after you roll out of bed, whether you are dedicated to a three-meal plan or a six-meal plan for the dgy. Eating breakfast is good insurance for: plenty of life in the Igte morning—a solid step toward controlling your weight. You may want to start your day with a sandwich—toast it, if you like—and fruit. To keep your power and not run down before noon, make your selections for breakfast from essential fqod groups recommended for each day’s eating; enriched or whole
