MARION COUNTY FAIR RODEO The rodeo, a colorful, exciting carry-over from America’s early west, will be the top entertainment feature at this year’s Marion County Agricultural and 4-H Fair. The Fair opens Sunday, August 6, and runs through the following Saturday, August 12. The championship rodeo and wild west show will play Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, August 8, 9 and 10. Fair officials pointed out that this rodeo will be the only one appearing in central Indiana this year. The rodeo consists of several feature acts, including fancy lassoing and roping, Roman riding, trick and fancy horseback riding, a group of trained “high school” horses and an educated mule act. Rodeo fans will be treated to thrills a-plenty during the exciting wild bull and bronc riding portions of the show. Here, of course, the cowboys compete against the clock to see which can stay aboard the rough, untamed stock for the longest periods of time. Other features of the rodeo include the impressive and colorful grand entry and a precision square dance accomplished on horseback by several of the rodeo’s performers. The 1961 rodeo is only a secondyear addition to the Fair’s many

TRAFFIC SAFETY Very soon a strong and energetic corps of Hoosier youth will be on the march in a mass “Back-to-School” movement. More than a million school children will change summer play habits to daily school routine. Mr. Floyd A. Kline, Sr., Director of the Indiana Office of Traffic Safety points out that of this number nearly 400,000 will be transported to and from school in school buses. Some 6,500 school bus drivers will travel nearly 220,000 miles daily delivering their human cargo. Last year, 89 accidents resulted in death to one and injuries to twenty other school children. A breakdown of these figures reveals that one accident occurred every two days of school during the school year. Mr. Kline says,
“It is a moral responsibility for adult drivers to watch out for school children.” He urges that motorists observe the following points during the forth-coming year: 1. Acquaint yourself with the color, markings and flashing lights of a school bus in order that you will recognize them on sight. 2. If you are the driver of a car following or meeting a school bus which has stopped with stop arm extended for the purpose of loading or unloading children you must stop, and remain stopped, until the bus continues on. This law applies when you are on either a two or four lane undivided highway. 3. If the highway is four lanes divided by a least a twenty foot strip of divider, and you are on the opposing lane, you need not shop, but may proceed with cau-
tion. 4. Remember that soon school buses will be traveling Indiana Highways every weekday until next June. Mr. Kline concludes, “The Welfare of children depends on what you do. It is a small thing indeed to ask that you become familiar with laws governing your actions when meeting or following a school bus.” SPEEDWAY HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI DANCE SEPTEMBER 15 DETAILS LATER START SAVING PAPERS FOR THE CYF PAPER SALE IN SEPTEMBER
