Farley, owner of the Farley Funeral Home at the north edge of the tract, last week petitioned the Board to annex the acreage, which is located west of High School Road and immediately north of U. S. 136 (Crawfordsville Road). Town Attorney Henry C. Ryder is expected to present the formal annexation resolution to the Metropolitan Plan Commission this week for approval. Preliminary indications are that the 43 acres, zoned for light industrial development, may be the future site of modem low-silhouette office buildings landscaped to make attractive additions to the area. Speedway came in for its share of praise Monday night at A. E. Huber of the Indiana Traffic Safety Foundation presented to the Town Board a plaque in recognition of Speedway’s “outstanding safety record during 1960.” In accepting the award, Board President Kenneth H. Smith said, we’re very proud of oiir record. We’re happy to accept this commendation in the name of our police department and all Speedway residents, who we feel have worked and are continuing to work conscientiously for improved safety on our streets.” And in an effort to further improve the safety record, the Board discussed the possibility of getting the State Highway Department to reduce the speed limit in the vicinity of the Speedway Shopping Center. erous residents feel that the present 50-mile-an-hour speed zone in front of the shopping center may contribute to an increase in the incidence of traffic mishaps at entrances and exits to the parking area. Police Chief Glen Collins produced records showing that five accidents have occurred at these points within recent months. The Board in other action: 1. Approved Ordinance No. 300, which gives municipal hourlyrated employes two weeks paid vacation for an average of 35 hours work per week for the preceding two calendar years, and one week paid vacation after completing the first year of employment at an average of 35 hours work per week. 2. Ordered the Town Attorney to prepare an ordinance prohibiting street vendors from using bells and other sound equipment on their vehicles. 3. Took under consideration recommendations for the repair of deteriorating streets in Meadowood Addition. 4. Approved a course of action to keep vacant property dear of weeds. Under terms of the action, owners who fail to keep such property mowed will receive notice by registered mail or by the Town Marshal. If within five days the Condition has not been rectified, the Town will send in equipment to do the mowing. The owner then will be billed for the charges. If he fails to pay within 10 days, the amount will be added to his property assessment as a delinquent tax. Authority for the action is contained in the Indiana statutes.
