Two Speedway students were winners at the Zone Speech Contest of the Indiana High School Forensic Association held last Saturday at Ben Davis High School. Ruth Haettinger and Donna Muncie will represent Speedway High School in the finals of the state speech tourney to be held Saturday, April 29, at New Haven High School. Ruth won Ist place in the Group Discussion section, and Donna placed 2nd in Girls’ Extemporaneous Speaking. Arleen Harris was 6th in Original Oratory, and Larry MoGinley was 11th in Oratorical Interpretation. Due to the fine efforts of these students, Speedway High School placed 4th among 20 schools represented and the 144 students participating.

/The school calendar far the 1961-62 school year has beat adopted as follows: Pre-School meetings, August 30, 31, September 1. First Day of School, September 5. Teaohers Association, October 26, 27. Thanksgiving Vacation, November 23, 24. Dismissal at noon for Christmas Vacation, December 21. Return to school after Christmas Vacation, January 2. Business Education Day (tentative), April 6. Dismissal at end of day for Spring Vacation, April 13. Return to school after Spring Vacation, April 23. Memorial Day, May 30. Last Day of School, June 7. The above calendar Is a return to a shorter Christmas Vacation after serveral years of two full weeks. Indianapolis and Beech Grove will continue to have the two week vacation next year, but all other township and metropolitan school corporations in the country have decided on the shorter vacation period.
In the first track meet of the season last Friday afternoon, Speedway defeated Plainfield High School by a 64% to 54% score. LIBRARY NOTES The High School Library is open four evenings each week for the convenience of students and adults of Speedway. Hours are from 6:30 to 9:00 Monday through Thursday.
