SCHOOL NEWS (Continued from page 1) April 15, State Band Contest. April 21, Senior High Dance for grades 10, 11, 12. At a hearing before the Marion County Council March 7, the Council unanimously approved the zoning of the site at 25th and Lyndhurst for a new Speedway high school. The Metropolitan Plan Commission had previously recommended this zoning. This action by the County Council culminates four years of effort by Speedway School and Town officials to secure this particular site, have it annexed to the Town of Speedway, and obtain the zoning necessary to use the land for a school. were the Marion County Plan Commission (no longer in existence), the Marion County Commissioners (no longer involved with this procedure), the Metropolitan Plan Commission (which turned down the project at the first hearing, but approved it at a second hearing), and the Indianapolis City Council. Throughout this period Speedway Town Board cooperated fully with the School Board in its efforts to obtain the necessary approvals. With this final approved by the

County Council the School Board can now authorize completion of building plans and can take the necessary steps for financing the project. It is hoped that final building plans will be ready by April 15, and that bids can be taken by May 15. When a building is financed by a holding company, as at least part of this building will be, it takes about 70 days following the opening of bids to complete the financing and to let contracts; so it will be late summer

before contracts can be signed for construction of the building. |ln the District Speech Contest at Ben Davis last Saturday, four Speedway students were among the winners and will represent this school at the Zone Contest on March 25. Donna Muncie placed 2nd in Girls’ Extemporaneous Speaking; Ruth Haettinger was 4th in Group Discussion; Larry McGinley won 4th in Oratorical Interpretation; and Arleen Harris was sth in Original Oratory. Our debate team—Alice Balmer, Dianne Tower, Bonnie Enlow, and John Southworth placed 4th. Sheila Gradison was Bth in Poetry Reading, and Don Ellison was Bth in Radio Announcing. Other Speedway students doing well by placing in the semi-final rounds were Kit Kirby in Poetry Reading; Barbara McHenry, Julie Jarvis, and Sheila Gradison in Dramatic Interpretation.
