Members of the Holy Name Society will receive corporate Holy Communion at the 8 o’clock Mass Sunday morning. These articles are not only designed to acquaint the citizens of Speedway with these sections but also to help (interested persons decide which section they would most enjoy working in. The Engineering section has the prime responsibility of placing all Civilian Defense vehicles, emergency generators, etc., into operation and of equal importance keeping them in a shape to be instantly useable in cases of emergency. Eventually, personnel will be trained to operate some of the Town’s specialized equipment such as road graders, bulldozers, etc. This section is headed by Mr. H. Kojola who works closely with the Town Engineer Mr. Ed Kridler. This section has rejuvenated a 1952 panel truck given us by the Town and put it into top mechanical shape. Johnson Chevrolet is now painting this truck free of charge and it will soon be equipped as a Mobile Communications (Continued on Page 4)

Kryter last Sunday evening, wish to express itheir appreciation. Mr. Kryter, who was caught in New York by the snow, traveled 500 miles that day under very bad road conditions and still appeared as scheduled. A CAPPELLA CHOIR CONCERT Music lovers of this community will have an opportunity to hear a concert of sacred music by the 40-member a cappella choir of Lakeland College, Sheboygan, Wis. The concert will be presented Sunday evening, February 12, 1961, at 4:00 p.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Sanders and Leonard St., Indianapolis, Indiana. There will be no admission charge for the concert, but a freewill offering will be taken. The public is cordially invited to attend. World Day of Prayer World Day of Prayer services for the Speedway area will be held at the Speedway Baptist church, 2986 Moller Road on February 17. The services are from 10:00-11:00 a.m. This is the 75th observance of the World Day of Prayer and is under the sponsorship of the United Church Women. Plan to attend and bring someone with you. FINAL FIRST AID NOTICE Beginning the week of February 13th, four Red Cross First Aid classes will begin in Speedway at the following locations: Monday—Fisher School, 14th at Winton Tuesday—Newby School, 18th at Whitcomb Wednesday Allison School, 22nd at Lyndhurst Saturday—St. Andrews Church, Speedway Shopping Center. The week day classes run from 7:30 p.m. till 9:30 p.m. and the Saturday class from 9:30 a.m. till 11:30 a.m. The course lasts for six consecutive weeks. Alumnae Chapter Mu Phi Epsilon Speedway is to be the scene Monday, February 13, of the meeting at which the Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon, national music sorority in the professional field, will recognize February as American Music Month. The sorority’s regular 6:00 p.m. dinner-business meeting will be in the home of Miss Edith Spencer, 4957 West 14th Street. The evening’s program of compositions by a Harvard University faculty member has been announced as “Randall Thompson, an American Composer.” Mrs. Clarence W. Schndcke will narrate the program. Performing will be an instrumental trio made up of Miss Rosemary Lang (clarinet) and Mrs. W. W. Thrasher, sorority members and guest artist, Mr. Ken List (oboe); Miss M. Ceceilia Lease (soprano), accompanied by Mrs. Jean A. Warren, singing the composer’s “Velvet Shoes” and “My Master Haith A Garden;” and a Mu Phi Epsilon Chorus directed by Mrs. Kenneth O. Marshall singing a capella “Rosemary” (3 from the group of 4 nonsense songs with words by Stephen Vincent Benet), a motet “Now I Lay Me down to Sleep” (words from the New England Primer) and Mr. Thompson’s double chorus “Pueri Hebraecorum.” Of interest to Speedwayites should be the appearance on this program of Mrs. Warren who a couple of years ago did her practice teaching, as Perla Zulueta, in the music department of Speedway High School.
"ATOMS AT WORK" IN SPEEDWAY Speedway is among 42 Indiana cities in which the “Atoms at Work” mobile exhibit of the United States Energy Commission will be shown during a fourmonth tour opening Feb. 15 under sponsorship of the extension divisions of Indiana and Purdue Universities and the Junior Chamber of Commerce. The exhibit is scheduled for Speedway May 25-27. “Atoms at Work” will bring to the Hoosier state the story of the peacetime uses of atomic energy in medicine, agriculture, industry, and research. Travelling with the display of photographs, samples, and animated models is a collegetrained lecturer who explains the exhibits and who is available for talks to local groups. The displays, some of them operated by the spectator himself, explain research and development jn the atomic energy field, ranging from the mining and refining of radioactive ores to the construction of nuclear reactors designed to provide electric power. The exhibit is operated for the AEC by (the Museum Division of the Oak Ridge Institute for Nucclear Studies. Speedway Chapter O.E.S. The members enjoyed a business meeting, followed by a white elephant sale. We worked on our craft of basket decorating and voted to purchase toweling for Swedish weaving as our next craft. A home nursing lesson was given and briefly discussed. The next meeting will be held March 2 at the home of Mrs. Marge Fidger.
American Legion Auxiliary No. 198 There will be no regular meeting of Speedway American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 198, this month due to so much illness of members of the unit. Mrs. Effie Mae McDole, president. Sweetheart Dance February 25th, 1961, is the date to circle on your calendar for the adult ballroom dance at Westwood Country Club. Dancing will be from 9 to 12 p.m. with Harold Cork and his band. TV will be available for the basketball fans. UNION FEDERAL TO OPEN IN SPEEDWAY SHOPPING CENTER Union Federal Savings and Loan Association will open its eighth branch office in the Speedway Shopping Center about March Ist, Milton S. Martin, President, announced today. The new Speedway Branch Office will offer the same complete services now available at all branch offices. In addition to free parking and convenient hours, the following services will be available: Insured savings accounts, home loan services, Christmas clubs, money orders, travelers checks, U. S. Savings Bonds, and Save-by-mail accounts with postage paid both ways. Martin pointed out that the new branch office will make Union Federal’s services available to more than 50,000 West Side residents. He said, “The opening of our newest branch office will fulfill our long time desire to become an active participant in the fast growing West Side.” He also added that the new branch office will have an attractive civic meeting room which will be available for use by organizations and clubs. W. Linton Atkinson, Vice-Presi-dent and Treasurer of the Shopping Center announced that Union Federal’s office completes a total of 27 stores and shops in the 35 acre shopping center which was constructed at. a cost of nearly $3,000,000.00. The shops and stores cover more than 185,000 square feet of store area. Parking space for the center will accommodate approximately 2,000 cars.
Girl Scout News Troop 557 chose troop crest, Morning Glory. We talked about selling cookies. For several weeks we have been working on our knots for second class rank. We are looking forward to receiving our World Friendship Pin in February. January 28 we went to a roller skating party and we really had fun. Pam Miller, Scribe.
