Pianist With Symphony Renowned Czech pianist Rudolph Firkusny will be featured soloist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Izler Solomon, in the next pair of subscription concerts to be presented this weekend, Jan. 28-29, at the Murat Theater. The popular artist appeared here in 1952 and again in 1958, when he performed the Fourth Concerto by Beethoven. For this pair of concerts, he will be featured in Beethoven’s Fifth Concerto, the well known “Emperor.” Firkusny has become so much in demand internationally that makes just ten appearances annually in America because of his heavy schedule throughout the world. A native of Napajedla, Czechoslovakia, he made his debut with the Prague Philharmonic at the age of 10 and was well known in Europe by the time he was 18. His first American performance took place in New York City in 1938 and he became an Amercian citizen some eight years ago. Mr. Firkusny maintains an apartment in New York City

and his permanent home is an old stone house near Staatsburg, N.Y. The talented pianist is also well known for his numerous Capitol and Columbia recordings. Mr. Solomon has programmed for this pair: Schumann’s Overture, “Manfred;” Eflinger’s Short Symphony No. 1, Op. 31; and Copeland’s “Red Pony Suite.” Of particular interest is the Carl Effinger selection. The young composer, who lives in Colorado and is the inventor of the musical typewriter, has written numerous symphonic works. To introduce this talented young American to local audiences, Mr. Solomon has selected his short Symphony No. 1 for its local premiere. The “Red Pony Suite,” by Aran Copland, is music for a ballent and is a lighthearted, joyous composition reminiscent of his famous “Billy the Kid” and “Applachian Spring.” Tickets at $1.50, $2.00, $2.75, $3.25 and $4.00 are available at the Symphony Office, ME. 5-9596.
