PAINTINGS OF LOCAL ARTIST ON EXHIBIT The 1444 Gallery, 1444 North Pennsylvania, will present an exhibit of oils and drawings by Harry A. Davis from January 13 through February 5. Mr. Davis is a resident of Indianapolis and teaches at the John Herron Art School. Recent honors include acceptance of paintings in Painters in the Casein National, 1958; Art U. S. A., 1958 and 1959 Indiana Artist’s Exhibitions; 1st Prize in watercolor at Chautauqua Exhibition of American Art, 1959. Mr. Davis was born in 1914 at Hillsboro, Indiana, and moved to Brownsburg, Indiana, in 1921. A scholarship student, he received his B.F.A. degree from the John Herron Art School, Indianapolis, in 1938. He was then awarded the much-coveted Prix de Rome Fellowship in painting which enabled

him to continue his studies at the American Academy in Rome from 1938 to 1940. He was granted a third-year fellowship, but the advent of World War II made it necessary for him to return to the United States, and he spent his additional year in New York City. At the termination of the felhe accepted the position of artist-in-residence at Beloit College, Wisconsin, remaining, there until called to army service in 1942. Surprisingly, the army returned him to Italy where he served with a camouflage unit and later as a combat-artist with the Fifth Army Historical Division.
