Liquid Metal Fuel Cell Developed By Allison A liquid metal fuel cell that has been run continuously as long as an hour in proof-of-principle re- * search may point the way to a powerful yet compact electrical system for space age applications, (scientists at Allison Division of General Motors reported. Because it has no moving parts, such a system may fulfill extremely high reliability standards required for space equipment. Fuel cells, long under study by the nation’s leading scientists, are devices for converting chemical

energy directly into electrical energy. But not until the invention of the particular liquid metal fuel cell by Dr. Bernard Agruss, electrochemist and chief of Allison chemistry section, had actual continuous operation of a thermally regenerative fuel cell been achieved. Improved versions of the small laboratory model under development by Allison, using an electrolyte formulated by GM’s DelcoRemy Division, may in their final configuration be as much as 10 times smaller than other types of fuel cells producing equivalent electrical output. Liquid metal fuel cells, depending on size, would be capable of producing various amounts of power. Mobile or stationary, they could operate in conjunction with a beat source similar to the mobile compact nuclear reactor now being developed jointly by Allison and Nuclear Development Cor-

poration of America under Atomic Energy Commission supervision. One of several types of direct conversion devices under investigation at Allison, fuel cells operate on the same principle as a flashlight or portable radio battery. But while batteries wear out when their chemical energy is expended, thermally regenerative fuel cells promise to operate for years if they have a constant heat source. Using the nuclear conversion process under development at Allison, a reactor would be cooled with liquid metals, through providing a heat source for the regenerative fuel cell. Heating would cause the metals to separate at their various boiling temperatures. Their recombination would result in creation of an electrical current which would eventually provide electric power for submarines, remote military bases, barge-bom emergency power sources and the electro-jet propulsion systems of the future. FOOTLITE MUSCIALS NEXT PRODUCTION Following a membership meeting Monday evening, Footlite Musicals, Inc. announced it will present premier performances in Indianapolis of the Broadway musical hit, ‘Taint Your Wagon,” Feb. 17,18,24 and 25 of next year. ALUSON AWARDED $19,464,000 CONTRACT A $19,464,000 contract for production of turbo-prop aircraft engines has been awarded the Allison Division of General Motors by the Air Materiel Command Aeronautical Systems Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, it was announced today by Harold H. Dice, vice-president of General Motors and Allison general manager. The contract covers T56-A-7 powerplants for Navy, Coast Guard and Military Air Transport Service versions of the fourengine Lockheed C-1308 Hercules combat-cargo transport; and T 56-A-8 powerplants for the twin-en-gine Grumman W2F-1 Airborne Early Warning aircraft designed to operate from Task Force carriers. The effect of the contract, according to Mr. Dice, is to provide Allison with a firm schedule on T 56 engines extending through the first quarter of 1963. “In addition,” it was pointed out, “the rate of T 56 production by the middle of 1961, is scheduled to reach a level approximately double the present rate, and to continue at the level through the first quarter of 1962.” The $19,464,000 contract is a supplement to a T 56 contract for $25,153,000 announced in September.

You may come anytime during the hour and leave when you desire. The minister will be at the chancel to serve communion to all who desire it. The service is open to all in the community who desire to take communion on New Year’s Eve. “On Catching Up With The Calendar” is the theme on which Rev. Howard E. Wright will speak at both services of worship on Sunday, Jan. 1. The church will participate with other churches in the nation in a great World Wide Church Attendance Emphasis beginning this Sunday, Jan. 1, and continuing through Easter, April 2. The theme will be “Try His Way—Worship Every Week.” At the 9:00 o’clock service this Sunday, the Immanuel Choir will sing, “Rejoice Ye Pure In Heart” by Messiter. At the 10:45 o’clock services the Chancel Choir will sing, “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” by Bach. Mr. Richard H. Alte will be the offertory soloist at the latter service. Commission on Membership and Evangelism will meet on Monday, Jan. 2, at 7:30 pm., at the church. Commission on Stewardship and Finance will meet on Thursday, Jan. 5, at 7:30 pm., at the church. Last Sunday it was our privilege to baptize Jennifer Lea Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David R. Miller of Washington, D. C. Our Church Nursery and Toddler’s Rooms are open during both the 9:00 and 10:45 o’clock worship services. The 9::00 o’clock service features “Family Worship.” Children in the first thru the 6th grade are with their parents during the early portion of the service. Following the Children’s Sennonette, and during the singing of the hymn prior to the sermon, they go with their teachers to their classes. Classes for youth (7th and Bth grade and High School) and adults are held at 10:00 o’clock following the early service. During the 10:45 worship service, Sunday School classes for children thru the Bth grade are provided. We think that you will enjoy the schedule, the new facilities, and the large parking area and find them very convenient. I.C.C. Evening Summer Schedule A tentative summer schedule of Evening Division classes for 1961 has been announced by Indiana Central College. This will mark the first time that the Evening Division has scheduled work through the summer months according to Dean Ransbetrg, Assistant Director. The college began full scale operation of evening classes in the fall of 1958 with 172 students enrolled. Registration this fall reached 708 students, an all-time high. College officials felt that the increased enrollment warranted an extension of evening classes through the summer months so that the students could shorten the time required to complete degree programs. Announcement of the schedule at this time is intended to inform

students from other colleges who are at home on vacation in order that they may plan for college credit work through the summer months. Evening classes will not interfere with summer jobs and permit students to earn college credit while they work. Interested students are encouraged to contact the Evening Division office on the University Heights campus for additional information. Both spring and summer schedules are ready for mailing and will be sent upon request In 1959,110 children were killed and nearly 6,000 injured in traffic. Begin teaching your youngsters now how to survive in this motor age, says the Indiana Traffic Safety Foundation. Cooperate with your police, teachers and safety organizations in increasing safety for children in your community.
