Getting the lawn ready for winter Fertilize in late fall, enjoy sturdier grass next spring Top growth of grass may appear to have slowed down, or even stopped. But important developments can take place if grass receives proper nutrition now. This is the time of year when plants can put out “tillers"—offshoots < of the (nain plant that thicken the turf. And roots can continue to grow through late fall and winter, except when the ground is actually frozen. A late fall application of controlled release Turf Builder* promotes tillering, provides steady development of root growth, and assures sturdier grass next spring. Takes just half an hour to apply Turf Builder to a 5000 sq ft lawn area. BEGINNERS DIVISION The Speedway Cardinals met their first defeat of the season Saturday at the hands of the Municipal Gardens Eagles by a score of 12 to 0. The Eagles scored twice in the first half, but were unable to convert either point after. The Cardinals attack was able to run for only three first downs in the entire game. Fumbles plagued the Speedway team and seemed to completely demoralize the players. Defensive play by the Cardinal eleven was quite good. Rick Hedge (RT), Eric Hermerding (LT), and Terry Thompson (IG) showed outstanding tackling form in their driving low tackles. By special permission of the officials on the field, the Cardinal eleven was captained by former quarterback Bud Collier. Bud was benched for the season two weeks ago with a shoulder injury, but has stayed with the team to assist the coaching staff. Bud will continue as sideline captain for the Cardinal games. Watch for him on the field when the referees have a red flag down. Hospital Equipment Psi lota Xi has sick-room equipment available for loan to Speedway residents.
