Beginners Division 3rd and 4th Grade Saturday morning it was the Packers 7 and the Cardinals 9 after 20 minutes of smashing football. The air was electrified with tension as spectators screamed themselves hoarse in a game that saw both teams make two tremendous goal line stands. In the first quarter end runs by Glidewell, reverses by Bob Brad Black, plunges by Rick Rozes and hand-offs to Bud Collier worked well for the Cardinals, but the march suddenly met a brick wall at the 8-yard line. Fired with enthusiasm the Packers took over in the second quarter. Quarterback Ronnie Byran repeatedly fooled Cardinal linemen with his tricky ball handling. Halfbacks Mark Wraight and Cecil Rupe hammered upfield five and six yards at a time. Fullback Ricky Whitten pounded into the line for those needed first downs. In the third quarter the Cardinals again took over the ball and marched to the Packer 2-yard line. Again the Packer defense held. It was here that fate determined the winner. Cardinal linemen swarmed in on a Packer fumble in the end zone. When the pile was unscrambled the Packers had recovered but the safety and 2 points belonged to the Cardinals. The Packers then kicked off to the Cardinals from the 20 yard line. Rick Glidewell took the kick-off and on a delayed reverse handed the ball to Brad Black who scampered across the field and down the sidelines to score for the Cardinals. Fullback Rick Glidewell drove down the middle for the point after. The Cardinals kicked off to the Packers. On the second play Packer halfback Cecil Rupe raced around left end, rolled off two Cardinal tacklers, evaded two more and sped into the end zone after a 50 yard run. Rick Whitten pounded up the middle for the point after. A stunned Cardinal eleven took the kickoff and were swarmed under on four successive plays. The Packers took over on the Cardinals 32 yard line with two minutes to play Hope surged through the Packers as they pounded their way to the 3 yard line. The Cardinal line again came alive with left tackle Terry Thompson and right guard Rick Rost breaking through to throw the Packers for losses.
