SCHOOL NEWS (Continued from Page 1) to explain progress in their study of Marion County school reorganization. The County Committee proposed three possible plans for the county, ranging from one that would leave school corporations as they are to a plan for one county administrative unit with one school board for the entire county. Practically all persons representing units outside Indianapolis spoke strongly for leaving the school organization as it now is. Indianapolis objects to this because, under the present reorganization law, it would freeze Indianapolis school boundaries. Of course, it would also freeze all other school boundaries and would not include schools when civil annexations are made. There is some hope that the 1961 General Assembly might find a way to remedy this freezing of school boundaries which has caused a stalemate in the work of several of the county committees over the state. The Marion County Committee was planning to call its advisory groups together again this week for a further discussion of the three plans. It is possible that after this second meeting with the advisory groups, the County Committee will adopt a preliminary plan. After it adopts a preliminary plan it must hold a public meeting for all residents of the county, to explain the plan, and receive further suggestions from the people. Following this public meeting the County Committee will have a period of time to revise its plan before it is presented to the State Committee. The plan does not have to be presented to the State Committee until about April 1, 1961. After any plan is approved by the County and State Committees, it may be put into effect only by a majority vote of the people in the proposed organization. If there is any doubt in the minds of any Speedway citizens about what Speedway might lose if a one-unit county system were adopted, following is a partial list: 1. Control of schools would pass to a County School Board. There would be no local school board. 2. Teachers now teaching in Speedway could be assigned elsewhere in the county. 3. Pupils now attending Speedway Schools could be assigned to other schools. 4. A county board could decide to eliminate a school if it chose. 5. Taxes would probably be higher under a county system. At present, costs per pupil are higher in the larger systems than in the smaller systems. Word has been received by Principal L. E. Thompson that Dean Hubbard and Tom Craig, members of the senior class, have been named semi-finalists in the 1960-61 National Merit Scholarship Competition. A total of 263 pupils in 530 Indiana high schools have received this honor. In football the past week the Speedway reserve team lost to Lebanon 32-13 and the varsity defeated Brownsburg 46-0. There is no varsity game scheduled this week. A new fall sport has been added to the athletic program. Mr. John Owensby, who will be the varsity track coach next spring, has been working with a group of boys in cross country running. Meets have been scheduled at Zionsville on September 28, at Pike Township on October 3, and at Ben Davis on October 10. LIBRARY NOTES The Speedway High School Library is open four evenings each week for the convenience of students and adults of Speedway. Hours are from 6:30 to 9:00 Monday through Thursday.
