Right HB Kenny Craig climaxed one Speedway drive with his scoring play and Hale once again ran the conversion. After holding Franklin to no gain and taking possession on downs, the Plugs scored their second score of the period on a slide out pass from QB Tom Smith to end, Bill Stovall. Left end Paul Parks scored the extra point on a pass from Smith. The third period ended with the score 28-7, Speedway. The fourth period saw Speedway continue their aggressive defensive line play holding the home team scoreless, while scoring their fifth and final touchdown. Stan Hale intercepted a Franklin pass and scampered 40 yards to score. Center Dave Schnable threw a perfect cross body block eliminating the last Flash defender. Fullback Jim Roach scored the final Sparkplug point leaving the final score at 35-7. The line play excelled for a first game performance and the blocking and tackling left little to be desired. Let’s all get out and see the boys make their second and final home appearance of the year tonight against the Greenwood Woodmen at the high school field at 7:00 p.m. JR. SPARKPLUGS SCALP WARRIORS Last Saturday evening the Speedway Jr. Sparkplugs entertained a huge Danville eleven at the high school field in the annual Little League Jamboree. The visitors upon winning the toss, received the kickoff and marched 60 yards to score in their first series of play. The extra point was good and Danville enjoyed a 7-0 lead. The Jr. Sparkplugs then took their turn at marching down the field, scoring on a 33 yard scamper by Stan Hale on a crossbuck. Jim Roach plunged over for the extra point tying the game at 7-7. The home eleven tightened their defense during the second quarter and stopped the hard running Danville backs from getting the excessive yardage they so easily made in the first period. The Plugs once again consistently gained good yardage, climaxed by a scoring play by QB Danny Oberholtzer. Speedway added their 14th point on a pass from Tom Smith to Bill Stovall. With 5 minutes remaining in the first half, safety, Danny Oberholtzer intercepted a Danville pass. The Jr. Sparkplug offense once again moved with precision and scored on a 6 yard pass from Smith to left end Mark Urban. Kenny Craig scored the extra point and the half ended with Speedway leading 21-7. The home team received the

second half opening kickoff and relentlessly moved the pigskin ever toward paydirt. Tom Smith flipped a 10 yard scoring pass to Jim Boswell and after failing to score the extra point, Speedway led 27-7. Not to be denied, Danville stormed back to score its second touchdown and extra point, narrowing the score to 2714. The Plug offensive unit once more went to work, never giving up the football until crossing the goal line once again on a 5 yard run by Jim Boswell. Roach added the extra point to give Speedway a 34-14 lead. The hard charging Jr. Sparkplug defensive line stopped the visitors cold, forcing them to punt. Once more the Speedway offense was a thing of beauty, a coordinated unit, eleven men working as one. Repeatedly, the line opened wide gaping holes for the Plug backs to scamper through. The last Speedway score was a spectacular one, with Jim Roach shifting, dpdging and finally speeding 55 yards into the end zone. The attempt for extra point was missed and Speedway led 40-14. With only a few minutes in the game, the Warriors scored their final tally to make the final score 40-20. The Jr. Plugs outrushed Danville 305 to 95 yards, led by Roaches’ 182 yards. The home eleven had the edge in first downs

Artificial Larynx A new voice for the voiceless has been introduced by the Bell Telephone System. Some 20,000 persons in the United States are without the power of speech as a result of paralysis or surgical removal of the larynx and must depend either on esophageal speech or an artificial larynx in order to talk. The new device, an electronic larynx, will be made available on a non-profit basis by the Bell Telephone companies. It resembles a streamlined electric shaver, contoured to fit the hand and designed to be held against the outside of the throat while being operated. The electronic larynx transmits sound waves in to the throat cav-

ity replacing those normally produced by air passing over the vocal cords. Speech is produced by forming words with the lips and tongue as in normal conversation. Pitch and emphasis can be controlled manually. Developed by Bell Telephone Laboratories, the instrument employs Bell transistors and is powered by long-lived mercury batteries. It is made by Western Electric Co., manufacturing unit of the Bell System. Manufacturing cost is $45, which also is the cost to the customer. Information regarding the new larynx may be obtained at any Bell Telephone business office. Bell Laboratories invented the first air-operated artificial larynx at the request of a prominent surgeon in the 1920*5.
