YOUR SURVIVAL PLAN “What Are The Dangers To Your Survival?” This is the second of a series dealing with Civilian Defense plans and its relationship to each Speedway family. Because the local, state, and national Civilian Defense plans in a general disaster for each family to take care of themselves for at least two weeks, this week’s article will briefly go into what some of the general dangers are. Your local Speedway Civil Defense is organized and partially equipped to aid the town in a natural disaster and small local disasters. It would be a farce though to believe that we can do anything but a token effort to aid the town residents in a large scale national disaster. Therein lies the biggest danger of all, the apathy of the residents to ignore the present known hazards and their defense. Most people tend to lull themselves to sleep by saying, “Well, back in World War H we did . . .” Yes, America was lucky then to have had several year to build up its strength and its civilian population never was involved in any conflict, outside of trying to get a better gasoline stamp. Poland, and many other countries were less fortunate and their plight should be studied for we are now in their position. On the first day of the war the conflict was brought to their civilians and their homeland by surprise attack. In the last several months the letters CBR have been used more frequently. CBR stands for Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Warfare. Several federal agencies have announced that this country is actively working on CBR weapons and their defense. To obtain a better prospective of each particular type of hazard, the next several articles will be devoted to explaining each danger separately. Next weeks article “C—Chemical.” As you read the next several articles you may find yourself asking questions which are unanswered. This is good if taken rightly, for it can lead to an awareness that all the answers are not being handed to you. It takes effort and interest by the individual in many areas to provide the answer. Boy Scout Troop 66 A pitch-in will be held Sept. 20th at the Christian Church at 6:30 p.m. At this time the boys interested in scouting will pay thenregistration money and all awards earned throughout the summer will be given out. Please bring the family and 2 covered dishes and a dessert. Drinks will be furnished. THE CHALLENGE OF TOMORROW Frank Froech Lexington, Va.—This final challenge, the challenge of the future, that we shall discuss today is, perhaps, the most propitious and promising of all challenges we have contemplated to date. How can I say this in view of the present world tension? Although international unrest is present, economical tensions have been reduced to a minimum. With science and industry marching ahead side by side, who can oppose the fact that humanity is also benefiting greatly in the omnipotent struggle. Do not be misled by the depressing situations related to you by some who would have it that way for their own advancement, but be elated by the bountiful situation we have before us now. Beliefs, countries, and peoples have all seemed unstable at one time or another. Just because our is being questioned now is certainly no reason to desert it. The communists have repeatedly stated that history is on their side by the right of evolution by revolution. That is, they believe that history is revolving in a continuous cycle, and America’s trou-' bles will lead to the final revolution, thusly instilling communism. We, as Christians, however, believe that history is directed toward a definite end. That end, of course, is a completely Chnstionized society. In the United States we can safely believe, I think, that we have found the beginnings of the perfect fellowship of man; impregnable and unconquerable. Of course, the communists believe that we represent the last great revolution in their climb to supremacy. Faith is, undoubtedly, the most intriguing word in our language. We now, more than ever before, must be ready to employ our faith to the best of our ability. To believe in your people, your country, and your God is to achieve the complete apex in patriotic living. Therefore, we must answer strongly when our faith is questioned. Tell the doubters America is here to stay! Preach to the athiests there is a God! Appeal to the wavering nations to consider right and wrong, not financial progression. To be the ultimate power in the future, we must express ultimate faith, nothing more, nothing less. If you will take the first letter of my topics of discussion in these four articles: Situation, Entanglement, Location, and Future, you will notice they spell the word self. It is around this word that my columns have been written. The government can become a dictatorship, the church can be abolished, in fact, any magnanimous deed could transpire if each person, each self, would, for any relatively short period of time, ignore his responsibilities as a citizen. In view of these responsibilities, we must be extremely alert in the future to choose between right and wrong, because that decision confronts us in all cases in which we are involved. People of America, believe in America: believe in yourselves. We are right! Believe in it! Express it! That is the overbearing challenge to ourselves and to the future. For America’s sake, we must fully accept this challenge. With God’s help, we will.
