YOUR SURVIVAL PLAN This is the first of a weekly series of articles concerning Civilian Defense andi its relationship to the town of Speedway. This column will be for the average Speedway resident whose only contact with Civil Defense is what he occasionally hears about it via the various news media. The most universal and easiest assumption made by many is that when and if a national disaster should occur, Civil Defense will provide them with everything they might need. This is only wishful thinking and a failure to "face the facts. This series of articles and the entire Speedway CD. program is bejng based upon the active participation of each family to establish their own individual defense in accord with the community plan of action. This participation will involve approximately 10-15 minutes per month for each family. Most people don’t expect to die within the next year or have their house to burn down but most people have life «md fire insurance to protect their family and assets. This entire program should be treated as such, an insurance program which you hope you will never need but one Which gives peace of mind. It will also strengthen our entire country because without adequate defense on the civilian level, which can only be achieved by the citizens themselves, this country is daily open to international blackmaiL Of course we can give up today by saying another war is unthinkable and maybe being alive under Communism would be better than all being killed. Such talk and you can already read and hear it* in some quarters, is just what the Communists love to hear. Ignorance leads to such statements and gives them support. It is with this in mind that these weekly articles will be written. They will describe the various dangers as they now exist and what some of the possible Civilian Defense actions should be. They will describe in detail what the Speedway plan of action is and the articles will be supplemented by not only a new warning system but also a Disaster Kit to be distributed to every home in Speedway before I the end of the year. I Next week’s article will be entitled “What are the Dangers to .Your Survival.” | This column is not an advertisement for recruiting persons for our active units, Police, Rescue, etc., which are being trained for local and natural disasters. We do have one general training meeting on the second Wednesday of each month which is devoted to cross training and general information. This years first meeting will be at 7:30, Wednesday, September 14th, at the Town Hall and any interested persons are cordially invited to attend.
