Mrs. Ed Lucas, CH. 1-6591 after 5:30 p.m. ON YOUR OWN We know a middle-aged woman, living alone, who prepares a five-course meal for herself each evening and eats every scrap of it. There aren’t many like her. Most people living alone dine on odds and ends. When you eat alone night after night, there’s a great temptation to make do with a bowl of soup and some crackers, or toast and tea or something on that order. But that kind of diet leads relentlessly to malnutrition. Weakness and tiredness follow. In that state, you’re a prime target for prowling germs. An adequate diet includes all of the “Fundamental Four:” 1) Milk and milk products such as cheese. 2) Meat, poultry, fish, eggs. 3) Vegetables and fruits - yellow vegetables such as turnips, carrots, squash; green vegetables

such as peas, string beans; fruits of every kind. 4) Bread and cereals, enriched or whole grain. Some people may be able to make good resolutions about eating properly—and stick to them. Or, if you can afford it, having a guest for dinner two or three times a week is likely to boost your own food intake. Should you feel that neither of these will do the trick for you, you could get together with two or three other loners and rotate having dinner together at each other’s homes. The arrangement can be varied by eating together in a restaurant one or two evenings a week or over the weekend. Then if you should find yourself eating alone one evening, no matter. You’ll have dined well the rest of the week.
PICNIC DO’S AND DON’TS Vive le piquenique. Picnic is from the French and supposed to be a happy time, with everyone bringing his pick of food. Picnics are healthful and should be restful occasions. In many instances, the chairman of the picnic committee overdoes his part. He organizes the program of activities to the extent that the picknickers don’t have time to sit down and enjoy their food and their leisure. Result is upset stomach, nervousness, fatigue, and general disappointment. Tired, hot little children are rushed to the tables and handed fistfulls of food. Sandwiches are bolted, cold milk is gulped, cake is crammed into overworked mouths. Sensitive stomachs rebel against fast eating on a hot day with a lot of noise and confusion. The wise picnic director will allow sufficient time for calm ATTENTION, SPEEDWAY ILS. ALUMNI MEMBERS! ANNUAL DANCE, SEPT. 3 WESTLAKE TERRACE

and peaceful eating and an interlude of rest. Oldsters, both before and after eating, should not vie with youngsters in competitive games. The fat man’s race under a hot sun is an invitation to trouble. No one should dash into the swimming pool immediately after eating, but should wait for an hour or so. Children, especially very young ones, should have a nap in a shady nook after the picnic lunch. This will offer a relaxing period for both children and parents. It isn’t the ants but the antics that sometimes spoil a picnic.

WARM WEATHER WARNING The chicken salad smells delicious. Tastes wonderful, too. And it can put you in the hospital.... . . . Because Mother boiled the chicken in the morning and left the pot on the back of the stove to cool for three hours. Some “staph” got in—they’re everywhere, just everywhere—found the food good and the temperature just right, settled down to multiply and produce their own particular poison. Then Mother fished out the chicken, cut it up, added celery and onion and mayonnaise and put the results in the
icebox An hour before dinner, out came the chicken salad. It sat on the table for a couple of hours more, while the family took showers, had cooling drinks. The “staph” germs were delighted. If there’s one thing they like better than chicken left at room temperature for several hours, it’s mayonnaise. They remultiplied—the ice box had temporarily inhibited them—produced more poison. The poison has no taste or smell, so the unwary family ate up all the chicken salad. Two hours later they were all in the
