Not A Moment To Waste! There is perhaps nothing more frightening than to find a child strangling and choking on something that has gotten into his windpipe. This is a real emergency. Death can come quickly. There are some things that you can do to prevent such tragic accidents. —De n’t give small children nuts, popcorn, or cake with nuts until they have learned to chew properly. —Chop meat for small children very fine. —Don’t let a child run around while he is eating.

—Don’t put food into a child’s mouth while he is crying. —Don’t let a child talk when his mouth is full. —Never hold pins or tacks in your own mouth. Children imitate. If a child gets something into his windpipe anyway, make for the nearest doctor or hospital emergency room. On the way, let him try to cough the object up. But unless he coughs it right out, keep going, even though he may seem to be breathing more easily. An object anywhere in the air passages must be removed. Don’t hold a child up by the heels and slap his back. That may jam the object against the glottis, the flap which closes the windpipe, and cut off his breathing completely. Go as fast as you can—minutes count. You can pay your traffic fines later.

New Telephone Lines Indiana Bell construction crews are placing 67,000 miles of new telephone lines in the Indianapolis metropolitan area in projects started recently, George K. Kennelly announced today. Kennelly, who is Indianapolis division manager for the company, said the cable projects will cost $1,198,000. Except in the Mooresville area, the work will be completed by late this year. The Mooresville project is the largest of 12 now underway. It is a $495,800 job, preparing for the introduction of dial service in the Mooresville-Brooklyn area about mid-1961. Facilities to enlarge Mooresville’s local calling area also win be placed by the construction crews. When dial service begins, extended service will permit direct dialing of calls without long distance charge between Moores-ville-Brooklyn and phones in Martinsville, Greenwood, Plainfield, West Newton and most of Indianapolis.
Kennelly said aerial and underground cable will be placed in Indianapolis to serve new customers and to make one-party telephone service available to present customers on multi-party lines. Most of this construction work will be in the FLeetwood, CLifford, WAlnut, STate and CHapel calling areas where new homes are being built. Similar expansions of cable facilities are underway in suburban areas around Greenwood and Greenfield to keep pace with telephone growth. Kennelly said the projects will provide enough new telephone wire in the metropolitan area to span the nation coast-to-coast 22 times.
