AAR. BLUM READIES BLOOMS FOR '6O STATE FAIR Arthur E. Blum might well claim the title “Mr. Bloom” at the Indiana State Fair. Owner of the Speedway City Florist Shop, Mr. Bloom says State Fair exhibiting is “a challenge to our ability in designing floral arrangements,” and he usually meets the challenge. Last year, for instance, he won 18 first-place ribbons in the floriculture competition. Some of the winning pieces were an arrangement of Fugi chrysanthemums, a shadow box arrangement of yellow roses and a vase arrangement of roses. For State Fair pieces, he buys “the best quality we can get.” Often his entries use “exotic flowers which are flown in from Hawaii and California.” In 12 years of exhibiting, Mr. Blum can recall only one disappointing experience which involved a technicality. He failed to receive a blue ribbon on a corsage of orchids because a competitor complained that the rule book called for an orchid corsage. (That’s enough to make anyone see red.) He will be working for a lucky 13th year of exhibiting when the Indiana State Fair rolls around again, August 31 through Sepember 8. tions included umbrellas covered with crepe paper, filled with flowers. Misses Diane Tower and Alice Balmer have spent the past two weeks at Indiana University attending the annual high school speech and theater institute. Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Ralston and Miss Elsie Ralston of Clinton are visiting Mr. Ralston’s sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Moore, in Hopewell, Pa. Dave and Bill Hissam of 4925 W. 15th St., Speedway, were presented with golf trophies at Florida’s Treasure Island in the Gulf of Mexico. Dave won the junior tournament at the island’s Gulf Golf and Bill was runner-up. They were guests at the exotic Eldorado with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hissam. Their father is pharmacist at Main Drug Store.

"B" LEAGUE BASEBALL NEWS Last Tuesday your Rockets, coached by Cal and Roscoe Ewing, played the American Legion at our No. 1 Park diamonds. Batteries for Rockets; Hackett and doers. Score 4 to 3, Rockets’ favor. I saw part of this and there was a fair crowd. Our Rockets scored all in the first inning. Hackett pitched a good one. On the opposing team Miller got four for four at bat. Good game well played by both teams. Friday night your Lions ball club, coached by Thompson and Maple, played Eagle Creek Braves for 8 innings to a 3 to 3 tie. Game was played at Eagle Creek diatononds back of Allison’s. Excellent game to watch. Not an error committed by either team. Batteries, Speedway: Raab - Staver - Rosner. Eagle Creek Braves: Royer-Roach. Score 3 to 3. Speedway, 3 runs, 6 hits, no errors; Eagle Creek Braves, 3 runs, 4 hits, no errors. Rdbb for Speedway did very good till the beginning of the third inning when they quickly got 4 hits and scored 3 runs. Staver came in, retired the side and finished the game with 1 extra inning allowing no hits. Speedway scored its runs 2 in the 4th and 1 in the sth. This was one of the best games I’ve watched. Good clean ball, no errors and all should be proud even though it was a tie game. What we need is more spectators. Why not come out and See these games?
Starlight To Present fur Abner" Starlight Musicals will change its sets from the exotic “South Pacific” this Sunday evening to the rudimentary, if imaginary land of “Dogpatch.” With “South Pacific’s Sunday closing, two Hoosiers will swing into action for the opening of “Li’l Abner.” John Craig, originally from Indianapolis, will have the title role of the guileless hero and Norma French, Kokomo native and I.U. graduate, will play his innocent but persistent pursuer, Daisy Mae, in the musical comedy, “Li’l Abner,” which opens a one week engagement at Starlight Musicals beginning July 19. The tuneful hit, written by Norman Panama and Melvin Frank from the celebrated cartoon strip by Al Capp, with a delightful score by Johnny Mercer and Gene de Paul (the tunesmiths for “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers”) ran for close to 700 performances on Broadway from 1956 through 1958. The melodic and hilarious hit concerns the citizens of Dogpatch, U.S.A., when the powers-that-be in Washington decide that their mountain community is the most unnecessary town in the nation, and therefore the perfect site for atomic bomb tests. Only proof that Dogpatch does produce something useful can save the Yokums and the Scraggs from eviction. When Mommy Yokum comes forth with her famous Yokumberry Tonic, which is capable of turning weaklings into Atlases with one good swig, Dogpatch citizens breathe a sigh of relief. Li’l Abner, the prime example of the success of Yokumberry Tonic, is taken off to Washington as Exhibit A for the cause of Dog(Continued on Page 4)

I.U. Students Study Housing For The Aged The fact that many of Indianapolis’ older citizens desire and need small, efficient, low-rental apartments within the downtown area has been established through studies completed by graduate students of Indiana University’s Division of Social Service. For some time now, the Health and Welfare Council and interested churches and unions—with the cooperation of the F.H.A. and the Redevelopment Commission—have been investigating the possibility of providing a low rental apartment building for the elderly in a downtown redevelopment area.
So that this investigation might be based upon a solid foundation of knowledge and understanding, two groups of students studied the characteristics of some of the city’s older people, and their housing needs and desires. Working under the guidance of their faculty advisers, Walter Johnson and Genevieve Weeks, and in consultation with the Research Director ond the Director of the Project on Ageing of the Health and Welfare Council, the students concentrated their efforts on two groups; the aged presently living within a redevelopment area, and the older members of some of the interested churches. This approach pointed up the similarities and differences in the needs and desires of a low income group that must soon face the problem of relocation, and a relatively well-to-do group confronted with no such immediate pressure. The findings of the studies will serve as a basis for a more detailed, overall study of housing needs of the ageing by the Health and Welfare Council and the Division of Social Service, and will give direction to community efforts for providing adequate housing for our older citizens.
