Yard Parks Clean Up Campaign Promotes "Juvenile Decency" The Clean Up-Paint Up-Fix Up Campaign is an effective means of teaching youth the value and enjoyment of constructive action During a campaign the children and young people of this community are called upon to join forces with the adult population in an all-out effort to beautify and better Speedway City. As they become an integral part of the campaign activities, and become familiar with government cooperative functions, their understanding of the problems connected with running a community increases. At the same time they will gain a respect for the ways these problems are tackled and solved. When the children discover the thrill of cooperative effort and the pleasure of seeing their work materialize into more attractive surroundings, a firm building block will be added to juvenile decency. However, these positive benefits will be forthcoming only if the adults of the community lead the way in active participation. Help support juvenile decency by exhibiting adult responsibility in our 1960 Clen Up-Paint Up-Fix Up Campaign. MAKE YOUR YARD A PARK. Time T,o Take It Easy If there’s one thing downright annoying it’s to feel like the dickens and have somebody tell you how well you look. But this is just one of the things that the tuberculosis patient has to put up with right after he returns from the hospital. TB patients are sent home these days when they are no longer infectious and a danger to others, but they are by no means completely well. They are still taking drugs for a time, they still cannot work full time immediately, and they must still get a great deal of rest. On the ether hand, there’s no need to make a TB patient who has just come home feel that he is going to be wrapped in cotton wool for the rest of his life. He can enjoy quiet games, walks, and other forms of mild exercise (provided the doctor hasn’t forbidden them for special reasons.) He can even go back to work, in many cases. Of course you’re not going to challenge him to a race the first day he’s back or urge him to join an all-night poker party once a

week. Just how much he can and cannot do has been explained to him by the hospital and by his own doctor. Whatever the restrictions are, he is ready to put up witK, them. Help him to keep within those restrictions by not tempting him beyond his strength. But help him have a good time, too. Today, a TB patient being treated at home can live. He can have fun. He can plan to go back to work. And being home with family and loved ones is one of the great boons of modern medicine that other generations attacked by the tragedy of tuberculosis could not have. Bright, Healthy Sunshine? When is sunshine like a chocolate frappe with whipped cream? Well, everyone knows—especially the kids that a chocolate frappe with whipped cream is very nourishing and healthy. All those vitamins! And proteins! And just plain goodness! But of course —as most kids know, too—too many frappes can make you mighty sick. The same thing is true of sunshine, believe it or not. Years ago the great beauties of the time used to go to great pains to keep themselves covered outdoors, even on the hottest days, refusing to allow even a little bit of sunlight to touch their delicate skinsA Might ruin their loveliness, they claimed. Do you know that they were perfectly right? A Texas physician recently told a symposium on “Sunlight and the Skm” that many of the visible signs or aging are the result of accumulated damage caused by the sunlight. The ultraviolet rays from the sun, the doctor told his fellow physicians, cause sunburn, pigmentary changes, and even skin cancers. Among the skin changes related to exposure to sunlight are a dry, coarse, and leathery appearance and a skin laxity that means wrinkling. Besides there are various changes in color, because of the effect of the sun’s rays on the skin pigments. What’s more, the sun-damaged skin may have a tendency to develop skin tumors, some of which may be non-malig-nant. But others might turn out to be malignant (cancerous), the doctor said. Fortunately, the man from Texas reassures us that suntan lotions do their job very well. Those that are derivatives of para-amino-benzoic acid are probably best. So let’s remember to take our suntan lotion along.
