Dody Goodman Dody Goodman, Jack Paar’s famous nemesis, will appear in “Dream Girl” as the opening attraction of the 1960 season of Avondale in-the-M e ad o w s, June 28July 3. Although this is Miss Goodman’s first personal appearance in Indianapolis, she is well known because of the national attention she attracted in a running feud •with Jack Paar a few months ago. She has appeared on the Eddie Fisher, George Gobel and Steve Allen shows and has performed in numerous plays. She has just completed a National Road Company tour in “Once Upon a Mattress.” Written by the famous playwright, Elmer Rice, “Dream Girl” is an engaging comedy about a wistful girl who runs an unsuccessful bookstore, her avocation being to dream herself into exciting, if highly improbable situations. , Avoidale, now in its seventh season, will present 10 attractions nightly except Monday, June 28 through Sept. 4, with all performances beginning at 8:30 p.m. Avondale Playhouse is located at 4000 Meadows Drive, in the Meadows Shopping Center, Indianapolis, LI 7-9627.
Picnic of German Park Saturday, June 25 The picnic season at German Park, 8700 S. Meridian Street, will get into full swing with the Indianapolis Soccer Club’s annual frolic Saturday, June 25. The Soccer Club is one of the more active of the Federation of German Societies. Soccer, the world’s most popular sport, has been represented on the Indianapolis sports scene through this club since 1952. A feature of the picnic will be the famous German Kueche. Henry Hagemeier’s Band, a perennial favorite at German Park, will provide the music. Playground facilities are available for the children. Come out and enjoy a day of good, clean fun. Westside Y Church Softball League Begins Six church teams began play in the Westside Y Church Softball League Thursday night. Oak Park Baptist downed Speedway Methodist in the opener, 7 to 1. Speedway Baptist was overcome by University Park Christian 17 to 10 in the second tilt. The final game of the evening was rained out. The schedule for next Thursday will be 6:00 p.m.—University Park Christian vs. Fleming Garden Christian; 7:10 p.m.—Speedway Baptist vs. Oak Park Baptist; 8:20 P.M.—Seventh Christian vs. Speedway Methodist. Marian Alumni To Give* Roman Ball A ‘ Roman Holiday” dance given by alumni of Marian College June 25 in the Columbia Club will benefit Sister Kevin scholarship fund. The dance will begin at 9:30 p.m. Guests will enter the ballroom past a large mural which represents the Appian Way leading to Rome. A fountain and garden in the- ballroom will suggest the fountains of Rome. Tables will be decorated with a small chariot and a lyre. Call Miss Estelle Jansen for reservations, ST. 4-1460.

Chess Tournament The 1960 Indiana Open Chess Tournament will be played at the Indianapolis Central YMCA, 310 North Illinois Street, and will be sponsored by the Indianapolis YMCA Chess Club. There will be a short business meeting at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 8, and play will start at 1:00 p.m. and will be completed Monday, July 4, when the new 1960 Indiana open chess champion will be crowned. This will be a rated 6 round Swiss tournament with 2 rounds being played on Saturday and 2 rounds on Sunday and 2 rounds on Monday, July 4. There will be an entry fee of $6.00 plus a membership in the United States Chess Federation. This tournament will have SIOO for first place and second place through fifth place will depend on the number of entries. Bring your chess set and clock if possible and be prepared to win because this will be the strongest chess tournament ever held in Indiana. Starlight Musicals Start July 5 Starlight Musicals of Indianapolis will open its 14th season under the stars Tuesday, July 5, with a revival of the Broadway hit, “Girl Crazy.” “Girl Crazy,” one of George and Ira Gershwin’s many top scores, first introduced Ethel Merman and Ginger Rogers to stardom. The show is being prepared in the East, and will come to Indianapolis as a “package.” The remainder of Starlights’ seven shows will be produced in Indianapolis. Following “Girl Crazy” will be “South Pacific” July 12-17 with Wilbur Evans and Joan Kibrig; “Li’l Abner” July 19-24 with John Craig; “Fanny” July 26-31 with Robert Penn, Carol Taylor and Jack Washburn" “Tom Sawyer” August 2-7 with Warren Hays, Judy Foster, and Timmy Everett; “Redhead” August 9-14 with Ronnie Cunningham and Jack Washburn; and “Kismet” August 16-21 with Earle McVeigh and Jan McArt. Pre-season activity is at a high pitch. The technical staff under Claude Koontz will have sets for three complete shows ready before “Girl Crazy” opens. Choral Director Edwin C.
