TOWN TOPICS (Continued from Page 1) Zoning Board of Appeals, has been appointed to the School Board to replace Mr. Wright. It is very satisfying to have men like Jim on deck who can so capably fill these most important offices of local governments. Your reporter is sometimes accused of going overboard in his praises of Speedway as being a good place to live and I hate to be an “I told you so” guy, but I would like to call your attention to your Speedway School System. Surely we must all be proud of the honors that our graduate students are taking to college with them and doubly proud of the honors that our college graduate students are bringing home with them. These are not just happen so. In my clippings I find that a Mr. A. R. Bradley explained it thusly: Success is rarely, accidental, usually it is the result of careful planning, courage and dogged persistence in making the plan work.

James Harris (Continued from Page 1) Speedway at the banquet were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Harris, Norman Hambrock, local Jaycee President and Harry Eakin, State Jaycee President and a member of the Speedway club, who announced the final standings and presented the awards to the other contestants. Three boys ended the contest in identical scores for the coveted Ist place in the State drivingskill contest. James Harris, Speedway Jaycee local winner, tied with David Lowe of Greensburg and Ralph Richart of Greenwood. Due to the unusual finish, the three boys will undergo another rigorous written and skill test to determine the winner to represent the Indiana Jaycees in the all expense trip to the National

The second test was decided upon to break the 3-way tie, exceptionally rare in competition of this kind. Each of the 3 boys scored 522 points out of a possible 575 which included a written examination, a skill or obstacle course and an actual road driving test. The run-off test will be conducted at Beech Grove on Saturday, June 18th under the supervision of the State Jaycee Road-E-O committee, the Indiana State Police, the Marion County sheriff’s office and the Beech Grove Police departments. James graduated this month from Speedway High School, was the winner in the Speedway Jaycee local Road-E-O

Contest held on May 21. Over 100 young drivers selected from local contests from over 75 Jaycee clubs vied for top state honors. Over 25 of these contestants were girls and 7th place was awarded to Judy Pierce of Zionsville, only 12 points below the 3-way tied winners. Over 7,500 contestants participated in local contests throughout the state conducted by the Jaycees in cosponsorship with the American Trucking Associations, Pure Oil Company, Chrysler Corp. and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. We of the local Jaycees, as well as Speedway citizens, wish to congratulate James Harris for his exposition of skill and knowledge of driving and wish him the best in the run-off tests. Good luck Jim and bring to Speedway the State Driving Championship.
