Children's Museum After Memorial Day, the Children’s Museum at 30th and Meridian Streets will operate under its regular summer schedule and will be closed every Sunday through June, July, and August, it is announced by Mrs. Grace Golden, director. This year for the first time, the Museum will be closed throughout the month of August, owing to the construction of a new wing at the rear of the present structure, the creation of a new parking lot, and considerable remodelling. A fund-raising campaign to raise the $253,000 necessary to make these additions and alterations has been in progress since the first of May, and Mrs. Golden says that first steps toward construction will be taken in July, when a small building now attached to the back of the Museum building will be razed. Formerly a carriage house, this two-story structure was joined to the main building in 1949 when the present prehistory gallery was built The first floor of this former carriage house was remodelled tc make a natural history gallery, which has been open to the public ever since.
VZith this small building removed, the new wing will be attached to the rear of the prehistory gallery, and will extend to the west boundary line of Museum property. Comprising 14,000 square feet of floor space, it will house a gallery fifty percent larger than any now in the Museum, and will be known as the Hall of Man. There will be two large meeting rooms for children’s activities and increased cloak room and rest room space. Tn addition to this wing, a separate building has been bought and given tc the Museum by an anonymous donor. Formerly a commercial garage, this is a building facing 30th Street and immediately west of the Museum. It will be joined by a covered walk to the new wing, and will be remodelled to form a large transportation gallery and a drive-in lending department. All of this work will require a year to complete. The closing of the Museum during August 1960 will permit the removal of the natural history- building, installation of a new heating plant, and erection of a temporary wall at the west end of the prehistory gallery. Except during this August, week day hours at the Children’s Museum are from 9 to 5 o’clock from Tuesday through Saturday. It is always closed on Monday. From September through June, Sunday hours are fronr 2 to 5 o’clock in the afternoon.

Automation is Burger Chef Key to Speed The age of automation has readied the hamburger and milk shake business, resulting in superfast service for customers of the local Burger Chef drive-in. A patented conveyorized broiler has cut the preparation time of a hamburger. This exclusive Burger Chef unit broils the meat and toasts the buns at the rate of 600 per hour. Automation has even replaced the mustard and catsup bottles. Both condiments are dispensed automatically. To supplement further its policy of “no-waiting” service, the local store, like other Burger Chef driveins across the nation, has also eliminated the usual procedure of making shakes. Two spigots of an automatic mixer fill cups as fast as the shakes are ordered. According to Burger Chef officials and operators, the local operation is capable of producing more than two and a half million hamburgers and shakes a year, working at capacity from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. under the fully automated food serving system. Hamburgers, milk shakes and French fried potatoes at 15c each constitute the main features of the Burger Chef 10-item menu, which was established as the result of extensive drive-in customer research. The automated food preparation processes have been developed after years of specialized engineering in evolving equipment designed to make all Burger Chef drive-ins ultrafast in service. Food serving is conducted from two windows at the front of the functional modern building while customers park in the spacious lot

share, an increase of 37 per cent over the $4.15 per share earned in 1958; and 17 per cent over the $4.86 per share earned in 1956, which was the previous record. Mr. Dial stated that new records were established in both sales and earnings in 1959 despite the three month steel strike, which had an adverse effect on sales of alloys, electrodes, and industrial gases during the third quarter of the year. Sales of chemicals and plastics felt a delayed effect from the strike during the fourth quarter due to shortages of steel supplies in the automotive and other industries. The outlook for 1960, Mr. Dial said, is for continued improvement in sales and earnings.
Better Sounds Music lovers probably don’t realize it, but both high fidelity recording and stereo sound were the result of research by Bell Telephone scientists. The telephone men also played a key role in developing sound motion pictures.
