AMwngfa several rarities m*jr be la the starting lineup, there is good reason to believe the 44th ——ll 500-Mile Race at the Inp«ii« Motor Speedway on May 30 wi& be dominated by experienced veterans. Three former winners are inrinded among the 66 entrants and all of them are regarded as strong contenders for premier honors. Rodger Ward, who set a race record of 135.857 to capture last year's event, heads the trio with a new car created by Master Mechanic A. J. Watson. Jimmy Bryan and Troy Rnttman—winners in 1968 and 1953, respectively are the other two. On the basis of previous “500” experience. Paid Rnsso is the “dean.” This will be his 15th Indianapolis Classic. Tony Bettenhausen, a former National driving champion, will be trying for the 14th time and Jim Rathman hopes that his llth attempt will be his most successful one. He has finished second three times and also has a new car this year. Other prominent veterans with four or more years of experience at Indianapolis include Johnny Thomson, Johnny Boyd, Dick Rathman, Duane Carter, Eddie Johnson, Jimmy Daywalt, Jack Turner, Bob Christie, Gate Hartley. Bob Veith, A 1 Keller, Chuck Stevenson and A 1 Herman. Local Library Need At the end of this year, nonresidents of Indianapolis who work in Indianapolis will no longer be able to get free Indianapolis library cards. This is but one stumbling block for the Speedway resident in reach of adult reading material. Other familiar blocks are the time required to reach the Indianapolis libraries (after a library card has been purchased) and the unfeasability of placing more mature books in the limited space of the high school library. Will those who are interested in helping to solve this problem, or who can suggest a solution please phone Mrs. James Hill, CH. 4-1741 or Pat McLaughlin, CH. 49272. Triple "C" Homemakers Triple “C” Homemakers will meet Fri., May 20, at 10:30 at the home of Nelle Godio, 5402 Meadowood. Jean Harris will be co-hos-tess. During the past two school years an improved program of studies for groups of more able 7th and Bth grade pupils has been under way. For the 7th grade groups this has been in the form of an enriched program with the special groups taking the same subjects as all other 7th graders. In the Bth grade, the more able students have been accelerated and are taking three years’ work in two years. This program was planned not because of any lack of achievement on the part of Speedway pupils, since their achievement compared to pupils in other schools has been very high. The purpose of the program has been to provide even greater opportunities for those who are capable of doing more by permitting them to take additional and advanced courses in the sophomore, junior, and senior years. It is not designed to permit earlier graduation. Since the program has proved successful, it is planned to continue with it the coming school year. Present Bth grade pupils in the special class will go ahead with their accelerated program, and present 7th grade pupils enrolled in the special classes will begin the accelerated program this fall when they enroll in the Bth grade. Two groups of present 6th grade pupils have now been selected for next year’s 7th grade special classes. These pupils are placed in the special groups on the basis of school grades, mental ability tests, and achievement tests. Participation in these special groups will be entirely voluntary. Parents of students who are eligible to begin the special program will be given complete information about it and will help determine whether or not their son or daughter will participate. Any one who starts the special program and wishes to revert to the regular program may do so. Also, if (Continued on Page 7) LOOK!
