DONKEY BASKETBALL GAME Friday evening, March 25th, the Speedway Lions Club will sponsor a Donkey Basketball Game at 7:30 p.m. in the Speedway High School Gym. Lions Club members will ride live donkeys and as an added attraction several former high school athletes will take on the school faculty. Admission will be 75c for adults and 50c for children and teenagers up through high school seniors. Everyone is welcome. CUB SCOUT NEWS No Pack Meeting Tonight! TOWN TOP/CS * Bids will be opened March 21st to extend water distribution mains to the shopping center site at Crawfordsville Rd. and High School Road. The same extension will serve the new St. Andrews Lutheran Church and a part of Meadowood Addition. Things are still unfavorable with the Northwest District Sewer. Some sections were laid in quick sand and infiltration is far above the allowable amount. It seems that overall planning in Marion County is becoming more confusing every day. The local Zoning Board has the power to grant variances, which is permission for temporary uses. The Metropolitan Planning Department has the power to grant permanent changes of land use. LIONS SPONSOR TALENT CONTEST The Lions of Indiana while in convention May 20 to May 22, 1960 at Evansville, Indiana are conducting a state-wide Talent Contest. Local Lions clubs will be conducting auditions and elimination contest from now until April 25. District contest to determine winners in each of the seven districts in Indiana will be held between April 30 and May 5, 1960. The Ben Davis Lions Club has been selected to conduct the contest for Wayne Township outside the city limits of Indianapolis and send two (2) amateur acts, (singers, dancers, trios, combos, etc.) to the next step in the contest. Each winner from a district will be sent, expense free, to Evansville during state convention, to compete against winners from the other six districts. District awards will be given to the three top choices and a grand prize for the state winner. Runner-up awards will also be given. Prizes will be of such nature that winners will maintain their amateur standing. All talent must be able to sign a statement that they are amateur, i.e. having never worked for money thus far in their careers. Anyone interested in participating should contact Mr. Emil Craciunoui or Paul Barz of the Ben Davis Lions Club for auditions as soon as possible. Smorgasbord The Bridgeport Temple Association will sponsor a Smorgasbord on March 19th, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., at Bridgeport Road and West Morris Street. Wednesday Duplicate Bridge 1. SPEEDWAY PTA NEEDS BOOKS FOR GIRLS Speedway PTA is collecting used books for the Indiana Girls School library, between March 21st and April 17. Girl Scout Troop 471 will be canvassing the town for- books suitable for girls 12 to 18 years of age. This project is an outgrowth of the findings of the PTA Study Group. Lioness News The March meeting of the Speedway Lioness Club will be Monday evening, March 21, at eight o’clock in the Speedway Christian Church. Hostesses are: Lionesses Rutledge; Ritenour, Smith, Hammer, Hanna, Mayhugh, Jordan and Emmick. Louis Schoenemann Services Held Funeral services for Louis C. Schoenemann, who died in his car in the Speedway business section, was held at 10 a.m. Monday in Conkle Speedway Funeral Home. Burial was in Washington Park East Cemetery. Mr. Schoenemann, 80 years old, was a native of Indianapolis and a life-long resident of this area. His home was at 5102 West 16th Street. He had operated butcher shops ip various locations about 30 years before his retirement in 1950. He was a member of Speedway Christian Church and the Masonic Lodge Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Eva Schoenemann; a son, Meredith Schoenemann of Indianapolis; a daughter, Mrs. Minnie DeMoss of Speedway; a brother, Carl Schoenemann of Indianapolis; two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Moeller of Cincinnati and Mrs. Mae Wright of Indianapolis, five grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.

Golden Wedding Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Fox will celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary at an Open House from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 20th at their residence, 7000 West 34th Street. Public invited. Their entire married life has been spent in Marion County. Mr. Fox has operated his Fruit Growing and Vegetable Business for 40 years. Mrs. Fox is the former Miss Mary Jane Ross. They have five children: Mrs. Martha Schockley of Clermont, Mrs. Oscar Fox at home, Mr. Robert Fox of Lafayette Road, Mrs. Mary Fornsley of Clermant and Mrs. Betty McFarland of Anderson. They have twelve grandchildren and one great-grandson. Lenten Service The second in the Sunday Evening Lenten Series, “Toward Better Understanding,” will be held at St. Mark Methodist Church 3040 W. 16th Street, on Sunday, March 20th, at 7:00 p.m. The speaker will be Father Leo A. Lindemann, of St. Christopher Catholic Church, Speedway. A coffee hour will follow the program and baby sitter service will be available. A.D.O. Meeting Epsilon Chapter, Alpha Delta Omega Sorority will meet at the home of Mrs. Lucile Melson, 1701 Cunningham Drive, Thursday, March 17 at 8 p.m. Mrs. Lucile Forbes will be assistant hostess. Westwood Country Club The Skin Divers will hold their regular meeting Friday night, March 18, at 7:30 p.m. All Westwood members and their guests are invited to attend. Former Resident Dies Services for Charles Ness, retired superintendent of the research laboratory at Linde Air Products Co. were at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Flanner & Buchanan Broad Ripple Mortuary, 'followed by cremation. He died Sunday night in his home, 5902 Washington Blvd. Four years ago Mr. Ness retired after 37 years with the Linde firm. He became widely-known in his field for contributions to design for safety, efficiency and economy in the generation, pipeline distribution and packaging of acetylene. Born in Chicago, Mr. Ness lived in Speedway many years. He was a graduate of the Illinois Institute of Technology and was a member of Third Church of Christ, Scientists. Survivors are the widow, Anna Morgan Ness; a son, Charles M. Ness, and a sister.

Demolays To Observe Devotional Day Members of Speedway Chapter, Order of DeMolay, and their families, will observe DeMolay Devotional Day on Sunday, March 20, Second Service, 10:45 a.m. Special services have been arranged with Reverend Howard Wright, Minister of Methodist Church located at 16th and Winton. The Master Councilor of the local Chapter, Mike Anthony, pointed out that the observance is held each year on the Sunday nearest March 18, the date the Order of DeMolay was founded in 1919. Devotional Day is a world-wide observance and is participated in by DeMolays in every state in the United States and 12 foreign countries. There are 98 Chapters of DeMolay in Indiana, with a membership of nearly 10,000. The character training youth organization, celebrating its 41st anniversary this year, is sponsored locally by Speedway Masonic Lodge. Chapters world-wide are sponsored by recognized Masonic organizations, but it is not necessary for members to have Masonic relations. Speedway DeMolay Chapter meets every Wednesday at 7:15. The Organization teaches young men between the ages of 14 and 21 years the basic ingredients of leadership—Love of parents, Love of God, Courtesy, Comradeship, Fidelity, Cleaness and Patriotism.

JAYCEE ESSAY CONTEST The Indianapolis Junior Chamber of Commerce has announced the names of eleven finalists in it’s annual essay contest for high school students. Entrants to the contest write essays stressing “the importance of initiative ana self-reliance in providing personal security,” and present them orally. First prize for the Indianapolis winner will be a college scholarship of SSOO, and a chance to win State and National prizes ranging up to S2OOO. JUNIOR CLASS PLAY TO BE HELD FRIDAY The Junior Class of Speedway High School will present this year’s Junior Play, “The Red House Mystery” on Friday, March 18th at 8:00 in the Speedway High School Gymnasium. “The Red House Mystery” is written by A. A. Milne and dramatized by Ruth Sergei. The play concerns the house guests of Mark Ablett, owner of the Red House, and an intriguing murder. As an extra added attraction, a bit of romance and a ghost named Lady Ann are thrown in. The play is under the direction of Mrs. Carmona Adams and Miss Barbara Cantrell. Baptist Church Plans Vacation Church School The Church of the Master, 1620 N. Girls School Road, announces its plans to conduct a Vacation Church School this summer from June 13-24 for children of kindergarten age through Jr. High. Sessions will be from 9:00-11:30 a.m. Mrs. George Linn will be the General Superintendent and the theme this year is “The Church.” Those serving as superintendents of the various departments are: Mrs. Robert West, Mrs. Herman Knarr, Mrs. Laurel Perkins, Mrs. Wm.
