Police Association To Sponsor Contest Robert Stranahan of the Marion County Sheriffs Department, who is President of the Police League of Indiana, announced today that the state-wide association is sponsoring its Sixth Annual Essay Contest among high school students in Indiana on the subject, “The Prevention of Juvenile Delinquency.” President Stranahan explained that this contest has been very favorably received by the students and educators alike, and it is being continued as a part of the Police League’s Youth Program.
The contest, which has the sanction of the Indiana Association of Secondary School Principals, is intended to stimulate the thinking of teen-agers at the high school level on the subject of juvenile delinquency and, through writing and research on the subject, allow them to become better acquainted with the conditions and circumstances that usually lead to delinquency. “The Police League of Indiana, stated President Stranahan, “is constantly striving through its state-wide membership to prevent conditions that breed delinquency. It is our belief that the students participating in this essay contest will be better able to avoid situations leading to breaking the law.” The League is made up of police and peace officers from all branches of law enforcement.
A total of $200.00 in cash prizes will be awarded to the writers of the eight best essays. The first place winner will receive $75.00; the second place winner will receive $50.00; the third place winner will receive $25.00; and there will be five prizes of SIO.OO each. A complete outline of the rules of the contest has been mailed to all high school English Departments in the State. The subject, “The Prevention of Juvenile Delinquency,” should be treated in not more than 1500 words and submitted for judging not later than April 1, 1960. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded on May 15, 1960. The 1960 pannel of judges include Harold N. Fields, Judge, Juvenile Court; Vance R. Hartke, U. S. Senator; Edward Cordell, Sheriff, Wayne County, President, Indiana Sheriffs’ Association; William Wilson, Superintendent, Public Instruction; James McCart, Supt. of Boys School, Plainfield; Mrs. Nellie Daly, Supt. of Indiana Girls School, Clermont; Harold W.
