Westwood Country Club News In the bowling this week the “Woodchoppers” are leading with 38 games won and 19 lost. Three girls rolled over 500 for 3 games. Speedway Lions Celebrate 20th Year The Speedway Lions Club celebrated its 20th Anniversary at the Indiana University Medical Center on January 13th. This being one of our ladies nights we had 161 present. The Speedway Lions Club was Chartered December 20th, 1939, but it wasn’t until the second Wednesday night in January 1940 that it held its Charter night meeting. The membership started with twenty Lions, of those 20 Charter members, only five are now active. They are Lions Floyd Farley, Robert Hill, Father Lindeman, Lincoln Northcott and Charles Turner.
Lion Lincoln Northcott gave a very interesting talk, relating to the history of the club. Stating that our club has been honored by having three District Governors, our present District Governor Lion Judge Norman Brennan and Lions Floyd Farley and Ray Oeth. Thirty members are Key Lions, having brought in two or more members into their club. President James Degan mentioned in the past twenty years our club activities have earned more than sixty-five thousand dollars, all of which has been distributed for Cancer Control, Leader dogs for the blind, Muscatatuck State School and for Civic improvement and community betterment of Speedway. The high light of our program was having our own District Governor of 25-F Lion Judge Norman Brennan as our speaker, and President Degan awarding the five above mentioned Charter members their 20 year certificates, and Lion Floyd Farley also receiving a 20 year perfect attendance pin.

GROUND IS BROKEN FOR NEW SPEEDWAY STATE BANK

Ground was broken, last Monday, for the new Speedway State, Bank building in ceremonies at the building site, corner of Lyndhurst Drive and State Road 136. Some fifty Speedway and Indianapolis civic and business leaders, together with the bank’s officers and directors, were present for the occasion. (Robert J. Kryter, president of* the Speedway school board, was master of ceremonies which were opened by the Speedway High School Pep Band. Emsley W. Jaycees Honor Harry Eakin With D.S.A. The Speedway Junior Chamber of Commerce held their Distinguished Service Award banquet last Wednesday, January 20th, at Rene’s Restaurant, high-lighting a weeks’ festivities commemorating the founding of the Jaycees in St. Louis, 40 years ago. Jaycees* and their wives and Jaycee bosses were in attendance. The banquet was opened with invocation by Edward Buckley. After the banquet, President Norm Hambrock gave the welcoming remarks. Ist Vice President Jack Courtney gave the remaining years* activities of the club’s internal functions and 2nd Vice President Jack Wilson gave the activities in the external functions. The honored guests and main speaker was State Jaycee President Harry Eakin, a member of the Speedway Chapter, who addressed the group. President Eakin stressed young men should use “Positive Thinking” and meet the challenge of Progress. He had just returned from Hartford Connecticut, where he attended the TOYM (Ten Outstanding Young Men) Congress. Harry cited the growing interest of young men in politics and government for three of the ten national winners were chosen for their activities in government and politics. The Distinguished Service Award is presented to a young man, between 21 and 36, for outstanding service to our community, state or nation. Leadership ability, personal and business progress are other factors in the selection of the winner. Harry Eakin was named recipient of the Speedway Jaycee’s 2nd Annual Distinguished Service Award. The award was presented by President Norm Hambrock. Harry, 33 years of age, was born in Spencer, Indiana, and attended the Speedway grade and high schools, graduating from the latter in 1944. He attended Indiana University after being honorably discharged from the U. S. Air Force. In his spare time, Harry tried his hand at dirt-track racing until 1949. The following year

Using a special chrome plated shovel, ground was broken by Harry L. Keller, chairman of the board of directors and an officer of the bank since its founding in 1929. Completion of the new twostory main office structure is scheduled for late this year, according to S. P. Hunter, president. The present quarters at 1532 Main Street will be maintained as a branch office. The bank also, operates a branch in Clermont.
he changed his occupation to selling life insurance. Toni and Harry were married in 1950. In 1957 he joined the Pilgrim Life Insurance Company and is presently Group Manager. He is also President of the National Home Oowners and the American Home Service Corporation, a member of the Speedway American Legion Post 198 and the Speedway Christian Church. Harry Eakin, a past president of the local Jaycees, has also served 2 terms as International Director of the Jaycees, yhars ha kas met and discussed international problems with Jaycees from many foreign countries. Last May, he was elected Indiana State Jaycee President. Through President Eakin’s endeavors, Indiana has rose from last place in 1959 to one of the top 10 states for achievements in the Parade of States. Wherever President Eakin goes in his business and Jaycee travels, the name of Speedway is known to more people. Through his leadership, he has obtained the confidence of many young men in the state and nation. We know Harry’s past endeavors and ideas has reached parts unknown and that his own ambitions and goals in business and for community and state contributions will not ease. DSA Chairman Ed Buckley, the Jaycee officers and members and the community wish to congratulate DSA winner Harry Eakin for his contributions to our community and that his goals and service will be remembered not as something of the past but as something to look for in the future.
Saint John Academy Alumnae At the final board meeting of the Alumnae it was voted to hold an annual Communion Breakfast even though the school no longer is in existence. The school is gone but not the sprit of the alumnae. The first of these affairs is to be held on Sunday, February 14th, 1960 with Mass at St. John’s Church at ten a.m., followed by breakfast at the Warren Hotel. FIDLER-GIBSON The marriage of Carol Anne Fidler and James Clifford Gibson will take place at the Speedway Methodist Church, Saturday, January 30. Reverend W. Wright will perform the informal candlelight double-ring ceremony. Miss Fidler’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Fidler, 1738 Christopher Lane. Mr. and Mrs. Richard W. Tubbs, 5881 Cadillac Drive, are the groom’s parents. The bride will wear a cobalt blue suit with matching shoes and light blue feather shell She will carry a white Bible and white orchids.
The bride’s only attendant, Miss Lois Hovey of Elkhart, Ind., will wear a light blue suit, with coordinated shoes, light blue feather shell, and will carry white amazonicas. Mr. Clifford Cook will serve as best man and Mr. William Geshwiler will usher. A reception-dinner will be held at Hawthorne Room at 8 o’clock. The bride is a member of Alpha Chi Omega, member of Mortar Board, member of Tri Kappa and a graduate of Butler University. The groom is a member of Alpha Gamma Upsilon, graduate of General Motors Institute. The couple reside at 6837 W. 15th St.
West Side Symphony Group Sponsor Card Party-Style Show The West Side Group of the Indiana State Symphony Society Women’s Committee announces plans for a card party and style show to be held Friday, Feb. 5, at 8 p.m., in the Holiday Inn, 4500 West 16th Street. This is the first project of the newly organized West Side Group and the proceeds will be used toward the maintenance of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Mrs. Richard Zeph, 2535 Philwood Dr., and Mrs. William Yoder, 3125 Chrysler Drive, are cochairmen of the affair. Mrs. Joseph Geiman, 6014 Schoolwood Drive, is ticket chairman. Baptist Youth Plan Week Of Activities Young people and sponsors of the Church of the Master, one of the thirty-two American Baptist Churchds in Indianapolis, have completed plans for their second annual Youth Week to be held January 31-Feb. 7. Activities include participation in the Sunday Church Services, meetings of youth boards, reports to the congregation at its February business meeting, attendance at the Singspiration of the Indianapolis Baptist Youth Fellowship, attendance at the interdenominational youth meeting, sponsored by the Indianapolis Youth Council, and a youth party. Selected as youth pastor was Mike Sterrett, a junior at Ben Davis High School, and president of the senior high Baptist Youth Fellowship. Serving with him will be: Vinton Knarr, Sunday School Superintendent; Richard Moyer, Treasurer; Donna Kempster, Financial Secretary; Sheryl Nelson, president of the Women’s Missionary Society; Jackie Linn, song leader; Marilyn Knarr, pianist; and Jerry Carroll, moderator.
Those selected for church boards are: Mike Hibbert and Mike Linn, Deacons, Carol Ruddell, Deborah Bevins, Brenda Williams and Cheryl Stout, Deaconesses; Corine Hudson, Harry Ruddell, Marsha Higdon, Marion Carroll, and Sandra Mithoefer, Trustees; and Pam White, Carol Stout, Phyllis Hudson and Jackie Carroll, members of the Board of Christian Education. The Church of the Master is one of the aggressive young churches on the West Side. This church, which has been worshipping for two years in a temporary location at 1501 N. High School Road, will soon move into their new church nearing completion at 1600 N. Girls School Road. Rev. William Helm, the pastor, lives in the community at 1323 N. Furman. Around Thu World With Pii lota Xi The annual Mid-Year Luncheon of the national Psi lota Xi sorority will be held Saturday, January 30, at the Murat Temple in Indianapolis. Dorothy Hanna and Ellen Jacks of the local Gamma Theta chapter will serve as official delegates. Also attending from Speedway will be Dorothy Marvel, Dulce Sawyers, Janet Scheeffer, Glad Messenger, Barbara Hittie, Jessie Nay, Jean Williams, Ellie Sallee, Helen Smith, Lois Johnson, Ann Elson, Virginia Williams, Lib Betsill, Mary Malaska, Aileen Douglas, Fritz Foland, Bernice Robbins, Ruth Parke, Kathleen Hunt, Genny Riggle and Monty Weir. Beta Alpha chapter, Flora, will be hostess to the 1,000 members from the sorority’s 99 chapters in Indiana and the surrounding states. Mrs. Lynch, before moving to'Louisiana during the war years, lived in Flora, where she served as president of the local Psi lota Xi chapter. She also worked as a national officer of the sorority for two years. Table decorations, all made by the Flora chapter, will feature six places visited on the imaginary journey—France, Holland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and Hawaii. Prizes awarded during the afternoon to the guests will be imports from the various lands suggested in the decorations.
