TOWN TOPICS (Continued from Page 1) know what is in the thoughts of these men as they raise their right hand and repeat that short, but solemn oath, but as an old codger, who has seen the last six of these events, I have never seen, or heard, a group with more sincere purpose and intent than the men you have chosen to serve you for the next four years. It is also a sad occasion. Some of the men who had helped with so many problems during the past four years will not be there now

is underway. Speaking of parks, did you know that Meadowood Park is now the official name of the park in Meadowood Addition. The Recreation Board recommended that the three town parks be named Meadowood Park, located in Meadowood Addition; John S. Leonard Park, located on West 15th Street between Lyndhurst Drive and Worth Street, and the Wayne Baxter Park located at Annex Drive and West 10th Street. By proper action the Town Board has so declared the parks so named. Your reporter is very grateful to the Recreation Board and the Town Board, and-the honor is deeply appreciated. It was Mr. John Leonard who first had the desire to give to Speedway a much needed park, and being a member of the first Board of Town Trustees, (our records tell us that he was the first President of the first Board also), he felt it his duty to fulfill his desire. It was during the depression years when men were working for a basket of groceries and an accasional half-ton of coal. There is a lot of sweat and tears mixed with the soil in the John S. Leonard Park. Certainly a fitting name. The Indianapolis Transit Co. has made a proposal for extending their services in the Meadowood area. The Board has taken the proposal under advisement pending further study. If a change is made it will be by authority of the Public Service Commission. Speedway b in a test area wherein the Indianapolis Power and Light Company will change all street lamps every six months instead of replacing them only when they burn out. Now that the steel strike has been settled we should soon get delivery on a new fire truck as well as see some action on the water storage tank in Meadowood Park. The Northwest District Sewer is still tied up due to the Operating Engineers strike. Plans for a new Shopping Center on Road 136 at High School Road are in the hands of the Building Commissioners. We expect work to start very soon. Calvin Coolidge, a man of few words, once said “I have never been hurt by anything I didn't say.*‘ Sure wish I could always remember that.
