Indiariapolis Hiking Club - On Sunday, January 17, the Indianapolis Hiking Club will hike in Crown Hill Cemetery. The meeting place is West 38th Street and east bank of White River at 2:00 pan. This will be an easy hike. Leader: Kay Misiura, WA. 5-4661. Indianapolis Symphony The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Conductor Izler Solomon, will present an all orchestral pair of concerts this weekend, (Saturday night, January 16 at 8:30 p.m. and Sunday afternoon, January 17 at 3:00 p.m.) in the Murat Theatre. Featured orchestral work will be Prokofieff’s Symphony No. 5. The first Symphony to come from the pen of Russia’s foremost composer in 15 years; the composition was written in 1944. It reflects the struggle and patriotic fervor which motivated the Russian people during the World War II period. It was performed here for the first time in 1954. Mr. Solomon has also programmed one of Mozart’s earlier works, the Serenade for Orchestra in D Major. One of four compositions by Mozart having a built-in Violin Concerto, the Serenade will feature Eric Rosenblith, the Orchestra’s Concertmaster, as soloist. Opening the program will be Prelude and Toccata by Gardner Read, one of the foremost contemporary composers today. Chicago Opera Ballet At I.C.C. Ruth Page’s Chicago Opera Ballet will present three numbers on the Indiana Central College Artist Series Friday night, Jan. 22. The program, in the new Academic Hall auditorium, will begin at 8:30 p.m. The selections will be “Carmen,” the exciting story of a Spanish siren and her lovers, with the operatic music of George Bizet; the shorter “Idylle,” set to the music of Francois Serette; and “The Merry Widow,” based on the popular operetta and Franz Lehar’s lilting music. John Kriza will appear as guest star on the bill with Melissa Hayden, Veronika Mlakar, Patricia Klekovic, Orrin Kayan, Kenneth Johnson, Barbara Steele, Dolores Lipinski and Fred Strobel. Neal Kayan directs the orchestra. Members of the corp de ballet include Patricia Dowling, Diane DeLacey, Jean Beaver, Carol Lichton, Willard Gluck, Ellen Gimpel, Larry Long, Esther Villavicencio, Robert Boehm, Carol Flemming, William Maloney, Ralph Robinson, Esther Adelman, Richard Lyle, Joan Lorin and Karoly Barta. Miss Page, a native of Indianapolis, has been prominent in the world of the dance for more than a quarter of a century. Her career as a dancer and a choreographer has led to her appearance on stages in most parts of the world. She founded the Chicago Opera Ballet company six seasons ago when the Chicago Lyric Opera was organized to revive grand opera in the Windy City. In the fall of 1955, at the close of its second season, the Opera Ballet began a series of annual tours. Miss Page is a member of a distinguished Indianapolis family. Her surgeon father, Dr. Lafayette Page, was a founder of Riley Hospital for Children; her mother was an accomplished musician. Her brother, Dr. Irvine Page, is head of the research department of the noted Cleveland Clinic. Tickets for the Chicago Opera Ballet’s appearance at Indiana Central College may be obtained at the campus ticket office or downtown at Grueninger Travel Service, 150 W. Market St. AH seats are reserved. Admission is $2.50, with a special rate of $1.50 for students.

Hypnotist Entertains Sertoma Club Richard A. Havens, hypnotist and businessman, was the guest speaker at the January 13 noon luncheon meeting of the Speedway 500 Sertoma Club at the Holiday Inn. Owner and director of Superior Laboratories, Havens has worked with the medical profession as a hypnotist for more than 25 years. Subject of his talk was: “A General Survey of the Usefulness of Hypnosis.” Formerly an assistant in the biology department of Butler University, Havens is a native Hoosier and is listed in Who’s Who in the Midwest, and American Men of Science.
Open House At Noble School AH interested individuals or groups are invited to attend an open house to be held at the New Hope Branch of Noble School, located at 2225 Kentucky Avenue, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 17. This branch school, which was set up to service retarded children in the southwest area of the city, is now in its second month. A committee consisting of Mesdames Earnest L. Bennett, Fred Otten, Allen Lund, William Jaques, and Don O’Connor will be on hand to serve coffee and doughnuts, as well as to answer all inquiries.
Lioness News The January meeting of the Speedway Lioness Club will be Monday evening, January 18 at 8 o’clock in the Speedway Christian Church. The speaker will be Mrs. George Williford of WLW-I-TV. He will speak on “What you can do about TV.” He will give a short address and the rest of the time will be taken for questions and answers. I Construction of a new office building for the Speedway State Bank is scheduled to begin within the next few days, S. P. Hunter, president of the bank, announced today. General contractor for the new main office building will be the George Bahre Company of Indianapolis. Pearson Electric Service was chosen as the electrical confract or and Freyn Brothers, Inc. Telephone Hour Musical stars will appear in pairs on the award-winning Bell Telephone Hour on Friday, January 15. The “We Two” program will feature four husband-wife teams and one brother-sister team. It will be seen on the NBC television network and will be the first time a full-hour colorcast has been devoted to stars in pairs. The program will feature the dancing Champions, Marge and Gower;, the piano-playing Iturbis, Jose and sister Amparo; the singing Mcßaes, Gordon and Sheila; the recording Pauls, Les and wife Mary Ford; and composer and band leader Raymond Scott and his songstress wife Dorothy Collins. Donald Voorhees and the Bell Telephone Orchestra also will appear on the telecast. This will be the seventh program in the current season of the Bell Telephone Hour, which recently received a Look Magazine award as the “best musical series” on television in 1959.

with glass sidewalls. Additional features of the modern building will be a fountain and pool under a plastic dome skylight in the first floor lobby. The basement will include a community room for meetings by west side groups, an employees’ dining room and a kitchen. The entire second floor will be rented for office space. The new building will be chiefly concerned with serving the bank’s growing deposits in Marion County, Hunter added. When the new office is completed, the present main office at 1532 Main Street in Speedway will become an additional branch. In 1959, the bank opened a branch in Clermont.
Westwood Country Club The organization meeting of the Westwood Skin Divers Club will be held Friday, January 15 at 7:30 p.m. A short business meeting will be held followed by a showing of under water slides taken in the Bahama Islands. All interested members of the Westwood Country Club and their friends are welcome to attend. Recreational games will be held at the Club Thursday, January 14, from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. for adult members only. Art Exhibit Garret Boone, professor of art at DePauw University, will have a one-man art exhibit at Indiana Central College Jan. 6-29. The exhibit in Central’s new art gallery will include painting, prints and sculpture. Admission is free. Boone has studied with Ray French, Leon Golub, Rudy Pazotti and Robert Laurent. He also has been an industrial illustrator.
Speedway Methodist Men's Meeting The Speedway Methodist Men’s Club will have their monthly dinner meeting on Monday, January 18th at 6:30. The guest speaker will be Mr. Robert Kryter. In 1955 and 1956 Mr. Kryter traveled extensively throughout most of the Free World. His travels took him to Western Europe, Central America, and Hawaii. During this time he photographed the great religious shrines in those areas and made a general study of the various world religions. PERSONALS Mr. and Mrs. Robert Perin, 2014 Allison announce the birth of a son, Robert Keith, born December 30th at St. Vincent’s Hospital Miss Judy Kay Wood, a junior at Butler University, has been named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Miss Wood is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Wood, 5032 West 14th Street. Miss Wood is majoring in English. Charles W. Rathz, local representative of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, has returned from New York City where he participated in a special advanced training course relating to estate planning employees group benefit plan and business life insurance underwriting. Mr. Rathz, who lives at 1127 Comer St., recently was appointed to the position of Metropolitan Insurance Consultant, in which capacity he will continue his insurance sales and service activities from the Metropolitan’s Circle Park office at 4916 W. 16th St. The office is under the direction of Manager John E. Zwemer.
Evening Division I.C.C. The Evening Division of Indiana Central College has announced seven courses in language and literature that will be offered during the spring semester of 1960.
