Indiana Central To Host Prospective Nurses The Nursing Department at Indiana Central College will hold a special open house Saturday, Jan. 9, for young women interested in preparing for careers as nurses.
Miss Virginia Sims, director of the two-year nursing program, said the day's events will be open to members of Future Nurses Clubs, other high school girls, and any other young women considering becoming nurses. Registration for the open house will be held in the lobby of the new Academic Hall from 10 to 10:30 a.m. (EST/DST). After that the visitors will tour the Nursing Department, in the basement of Daily Hall. Lunch, at $1 per person, will be served in the college dining hall at 12 noon. A presentation of details of the nursing program will be given in the auditorium from 1:15 to 2:30 pm.
Assisting Miss Sims will be the two other members of the Nursing Department faculty, Mrs. Blanche Krick and Mrs. Marilyn Gunderman. All three are graduate nurses, with experience in hospitals and schools. Indiana Central’s nursing program began this year with 24 students enrolled. The future nurses attend classes on the college campus and receive clinical instruction at Community Hospital, the newest one in Indianapolis. The program is approved by the Indiana State Board of Nurses Registration and Nursing Education and by the National League for Nursing.
In two college years and one summer session a young woman can complete work which will give her an associate degree in" science and prepare her to take the regular state examination to become a registered nurse. Passing the examination will qualify her for immediate work as a nurse. Or, if she prefers, she can continue in college for another two years and receive a bachelor’s degree before beginning her nursing career. Admission to the nursing program, tuition and fees are the same as apply to any other person applying for admission to Indiana Central College. All 24 girls who started the course this school year are enthusiastic about it. Miss Sims pointed out that none who entered has dropped out, and she remarked that drop-outs are common within the first few months among students starting such training. Girls wishing to learn more about Indiana Central's nursing program do not need to make advance reservations to attend the open house. All that is necessary is to be on the campus for registration at 10 am Saturday, Jan. 9.
