The Human Time Bombs If there were a hundred thousand unknown people running around with delayed-action bombs in their pockets, the whole country would be in a panic. Well, in a way, there are. There are that many people, unknown to health authorities, who have infectious cases of tuberculosis and are passing this extremely dangerous illness on to others.

Some of these people are the derelicts of Skid Row, the drifters, the hoboes. It’s a tough job to get hold of them long enough to give them tuberculin tests and chest x-rays. But with some of the money contributed for Christmas Seals, efforts are being made to find some of these walking TB threats in the flop houses where they sometimes stay. But many others are responsible citizens, no different from you or your neighbors. They can be warned and urged. But they, too, are difficult to get hold of for tuberculin tests and chest x-rays. And so they, too, never find out that they have tuberculosis. When recognizable symptoms finally show up, it may be too late for life-saving treatment, or so much lung damage may have been done that the patient will never be really well again.
