It's Freezing Weather The thermometer won’t confirm that it’s freezing weather but your produce markets do. Fruits and vegetables are available in quantities with reasonable prices, an ideal situation for filling your freezer. When buying foods to freeze know the quality because freezing does not improve quality. It is wise to freeze only enough fruits and vegetables to provide from one season to the next. Keep your freezer well filled and use it often. Foods which now the family is tired of will be a favorite in late fall and winter. The more food you put in and take out of your freezer, the lower the cost per pound of frozen food, as costs of upkeep and equipment remain the same.

The Eyes Have It ”■ In driving a car, the eyes have it—they control 90% of all movements and decisions behind the wheel. With a little effort and practice any driver can learn “selective seeing.” This method of using your eyes to the best advantage enables you to “read” the traffic pattern at a glance. Here are same steps in selective seeing that make use of all the areas of your vision, fringe or side, as well as main or central sight: Aim your vision high—not just in front of your own car. Keep your central vision moving over the foreground, background, and sideground—for a block ahead in towns, half a mile ahead on country roads. This way your fringe vision first sees an object, central vision identifies it. Keep your eyes moving. A fixed stare becomes a blank stare. At night, avoid staring at the bright spot your headlights make. Along the super-highways, watch out for “highway hypnosis.” If you’re really groggy, pull off the road and take a nap. Make sure the other driver sees you. Blow your horn or flash your lights if in doubt. Get in the correct turning lane early and check in the rear mirror to make sure the driver behind you gets the idea. Be sure you have an out. Even of you’re right, the other driver can get you in trouble. Keep a space cushion around your car when possible, especially on slippery roads. None of the rules will do any good if your vision isn’t up to par. That includes seeing objects clearly, good depth perception, proper field of vision, and good night vision. Have your eyes examined regularly. Vision should be checked by an expert who can recommend corrections, where possible.

Freezing Meat If your family appreciates roasts buy during steak season—summer, and freeze for winter treats. Steak prices, high in summer due to their popularity at barbecues and their quick cooking time, fall during the colder months of the year. Thus, those times are wise steak freezing times.

Seafood In The Summer If you go fishing in the market these days you’ll find seafood lower in cost than a year ago. Nutritious and delicious, cook fish outdoors these summer days. Whether you’ve caught or bought it, your barbecue makes fish special. As fish is generally low in fat, oil the grill and fish well, or use a wire roasting rack to prevent sticking. A delicate food in flavor and texture, fish needs careful seasoning and little handling. Mildly flavored sauces are used and cooking times are short so flavor and tenderness are preserved. You can generally figure three servings per pound unless appetites are big at your home. Do a little figuring on cost per pound when you make your catch. You’ll save.

THE QUICK, CONVENIENT WAY TO BORROW MONEY Now, you can have an established, personal line of bank credit from which to buy anything or pay anything—through your own checking account. Here’s how it works: After your application for a Speed-Bank Credit Account has been approved, you borrow any amount you want, whenever you want—from SIOO up to the limit of your available credit. The amount you borrow is put into your regular checking account. Then you can use it simply by writing your own checks. You pay charges only on money actually used—at low bank rates. As you repay your loan, your account builds back to increase your credit reserve.
