own money through this plan during the last two years and the Company added $154,389. Thruout the country employees of Union Carbide Corporation received more than $60,750,465. Linde Co. .is a division of Union Carbide. Under this plan, employees set aside up to 7% percent of their earnings and the company adds 10, 20 or 30 percent to this depending on whether the employee has one, two or three or more years of company service. The plan contains provisions for short-term savings and long range investments or a combination of both. This flexibility, which is one of the outstanding features of the plan, permits employees to set aside cash for a distribution every two years and also provides the choice of long range investment in either U. S. Savings Bonds or Union Carbide stock. Savings plans were made available to Union Carbide employees as early as 1935. Slick Airways, Inc. plans to purchase six giant new Allison-powered Lockheed Super Hercules Powered by four advanced Allison Prop-jet engines, the 230,000pound gross weight airfreighter will be capable of non-stop flights carrying 77,000 pounds—3B% tons —on the long haul across the American continent. Slick is expected to begin Super Hercules service early in 1962. “With a direct operating cost of less than four cents per ton mile, this is the breakthrough air vehicle for mass volume movement of cargo at rates truly competitive with surface transportation,” declared Earl F. Slick, board chairman. Gross usable cargo volume of the huge airfreighter will be more than 7,500 cubic feet. The Super Hercules will cruise as speeds of approximately 400 miles an hour. It will be fully pressurized and air conditioned so that perishables, animals and other sensitive types of cargo can be air transported. With a planned fleet of 11 Super Hercules aircraft, Slick Airways estimated it would carry 500 million ton-miles of cargo per year—almost twice as much as was carried by the domestic industry in 1958.

Here's To Health Sometime it’s a good idea to put off until tomorrow what better not be done today—like during the dog days of August, when the “Discomfort Index” may be high. Since June 1, the U. S. Weather Bureau has been helpfully announcing what it calls “the discomfort index” in its weather forecasts. This figure combines the air’s temperature and the amount of mositure in it. A discomfort figure of 75 may mean 80’ temperature and. 60% humidity, or 85* temperature and 30% humility, or 75’ temperature and 100% humidity. People do not all react to such situations in the same way. When the index is 75, the Weather Bureau thinks, about half of the population feels uncombortable. When it is down to 70, only ten percent of us feel put out. At 80, everybody is miserable. Now you have a pretty good idea what your discomfort index is, so plan your day accordingly. If the morning forecast is poor you’re able to get away with it, do as little as possible. The less motion, the less misery. At home do only what has to be done—dishes, beds, straightening up. Find a nice cool spot to sit in indoors is generally better than outdoors on hot, humid days —and sit. Wear as little as you need to be presentable, and eat simple, wholesome food. The same applies on the job. Where planning is possible, do lighter tasks, put off heavy work for a cooler day. Dress lightly in cottons (women) or the new washable synthetics (men and women), and eat simply. In wintertime, when it snows, you usually call off meetings, keep the kids home from school, and try to get home early yourself—mostly because of driving hazards. The same thinking should apply to the worst summer days, too, because when the discomfort index hits 80 or more it’s equally a hazard. Buying And Using Herbs And Spices Cooking with herbs and spices is fun—the amount may be varied to suit your family’s taste. For best seasoning, use only fresh herbs and spices. Dorothy M.esserschmidt, Consumer Foods Agent for Marion County, says that, if the spices are in glass jars, color will indicate their freshness. The brighter the color, the fresher they will be. To assure continued freshness, buy only in small quantities. If the herb or spice develops a bitter or dust-like aroma, replace it. These seasonings shouldn’t be kept longer than a year. The only rule for adding herbs

and spices to foods is to be subtle. Use just enough to make yvur family wonder what is giving the wonderful flavor. You shouldn't add so much they wifi know that basil or chives been added.
