Checker Tourney Starts Monday All who wish to compete in the Checker Tourney and the Chinese Checker Tourney should meet Monday morning at 10:00 in the Main Park. There will be no sign-ups ahead of time. Those who are there will compete. The first Field Day will be July 3rd in the Main Park. The installation dinner will be at the Continental Hotel at 6:15 p.m. The dinner will be followed by the group attending opening night at the Avondale Playhouse to see “Twentieth Century.” The new officers to be installed are Albert F. Wagner, president; Vincent Kraft and Lewis “Ollie” Boles, vice-presidents; Dencil A. Young, treasurer, and George L. Bange, secretary; also to be installed on the board of directors are Jim Farley and Marvin Kingery. Joe Brooks and Omar Lambert have one more year to serve on the board of directors.

Indiana's Newest Golf Driving Range Opens This Weekend Indiana’s newest golf driving range opens this weekend amid a thunderous collection of contests, hundreds of dollars in merchandise prizes, famous sports personages including the Indiana and Kentucky All-Star basketball players and Indiana’s Miss Universe” entry, along with the opportunity to hit dozen’s of golf balls free. The 56th Street Golf Center, owned by Mr. Fran Truitt, outstanding golfer and Indianapolis civic leader, is located on West 56th Street between N. Kessler Blvd. and State Road 52. Constructed at a cost approaching $35,000, the beautifully landscaped range features a smooth, velvet-green driving area lighted by six sets of lights totaling 45,000 watts. Twenty-five tee platforms are arranged in a slight arc and eight of them are canopied for bad weather and winter practice. Planter boxes with an array of flowers separate each tee. Mr. Truitt emphasized the Golf Center has purchased brand new U.S. Royal range balls to begin the season and replacements will be made with new balls only. The Center also has a pro shop which will be staffed by a golf professional beginning next season. The Golf Center will begin its grand opening festivities Friday at 11 a.m. and will remain open thereafter each day from 11 a.m. until midnight.

JO ANN THOMAS WEDS DAVID THOMAS Mrs. David K. Thomas before her marriage at 7 Saturday night in Speedway Christian Church was Miss Jo Ann Thomas. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry H. Thomas, R.R. 9. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Thomas, 8739 John’s Drive. Dr. Raymond Montgomery performed the double-ring ceremony. Mrs. Jerry Fentz, Greenfield, was matron of honor and Lowell Haverstick, Beech and Mrs. Melvin Rumph were bridesmaids. Larry Thomas, R.R. 18, was best man. Ushering were\ Jack Schmidt, Melvin Rumph, Harold Kuykendall and A 1 Hunt Jr.
The bride’s gown of silk organza featured a molded bodice of Chantilly lace. The gown’s full skirt fell into a chapel train. A Chantilly lace cap held the bride’s finger-tip veil and she carried a white orchid with pink throat, touch of ivy and pale pink streamers and a cascade of Amazonicas with pink miniature roses in their centers and stephanotis. The matron of honor and bridesmaids wore pink silk organaza, the fitted bodices cut on princess lines and the shirred necklines with flowing back panel. The full-gored skirts were bal-lerina-length and the attendants wore pink silk organza bows with short veils on their heads. They carried pink bouquets of snapdragons, carnations and babies’breath in white baskets. A reception was held in the church immediately following the wedding and a dinner was held later at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Thomas, 8739 John’s Drive, for members of the wedding party and relatives. The couple traveled to the Smoky Mountains. They will make their home on R.R. 18, after July 1. The bride is a graduate of Northwestern University School of Music and the bridegroom is a graduate of General Motors Institute and a member of the Gilgal Fraternity.
PERSONALS Alice I. McCracken of Speedway High School will attend the first division of the High School Journalism Institute at Indiana University June 28-July 11. A total of 125 pupils from 57 schools in Indiana, Ohio and Illinois will attend the two week session devoted to instruction for staffs of mimeographed papers. Classes will be taught in editing, newswriting, photography, business management, radio and television writing, and mimeograph production. Mr. and Mrs. John Jarman and family of Escondido, California, formerly of 1230 N. High School Road, will be visiting Mrs. Jarman’s mother, Mrs. Joseph Hilgenberg, soon. September 28 will be the last day for taxpayers to appeal budget to State Board of Tax (Continued on page 3) New Church To Hold Charter Day Service The Church of the Master Baptist Church, which has been holding its church services at 1501 N. High School Road, will hold its Charter Day Service at that address on June 28th at 2:30 p.m. At this service all who have become members of the church of the Master will be privileged to sign the Charter Roll. Also at this service the church’s new constitution and covenant will be recognized. Words of greeting will be brought from the Rev. Richard Mutersstaugh, executive secretary of the Indianapolis Baptist Association and the Rev. Edward Dowdy, vice-moderator of the Indianapolis Baptist Association and pastor of Woodruff Place Baptist Church. The service will be concluded with the ordinance of the Lord’s Super. n.

New United Church Begins July sth On Sunday, July sth, 11:15 a.m., service of the new United Church of Christ (Evangelical and Reformed-Congregational Christian) congregation will be held at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church —l6th St. and Beeler Ave. This will be the time of worship on following Sundays also. Church Of The Master Acquires Building Site The Church of the Master Baptist Church, which has met for a year and a half at 1501 N. High School Road, has purchased a 5-acre building site from Ridgewood Builders, Inc., at 1700 N. Girls School Road. The church expects to begin erection of the first unit yet this year. The church is a member of the Indianapolis Baptist Association and the Indiana Baptist Convention. Rev. William Helm, who lives at 1323 N. Furman, is pastor. Westside Family YMCA Open sesame! The hitherto all male YMCA has opened its doors to the fair sex. Hair dryers, special locker rooms, cosmetic tables and lounges are new kinds of equipment and facilities for the Westside Family YMCA. SUE SWENSON TO WED r ROBERT CONWAY The marriage of Miss Carolyn Sue Swenson and Mr. Robert James Conway of Anderson, Indiana will be solemnized June 27 at 11:30 in St. Christopher’s Catholic Church. The Rev. L. A. Lindemann will officiate at the ceremony. A reception will follow at the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority House on the Butler Campus. Attending the bride will be Miss JoAnn Hafert, of Logansport as Maid of Honor and Mrs. John Stegemoller of Topeka, Kansas, will act as her Matron of Honor. Bridesmaids will include, Mrs. John Holobek of West Lafayette, Miss Ginny Sims and Miss Shirlee Smith. Mr. Conway has asked Mr. Jack Clark to act as best man and Mr. Jack Conway of Sarasota, Florida, Mr. Richard Conway, Mr. Wendell Smith, and Mr. George Stroup will usher. The couple will honeymoon in Florida and will live at 1100 Hendricks in Anderson after July 15th. Big Reading Club More than two thousand books circulated last week • the first week of the summer recreational reading program at the Library. To date most of the 250 members of the Big Top Reading Club are reporting daily on books read and new members are still enrolling. The program runs for six weeks—four more after this week—and those boys and girls who read the required 15 books in the Club will be issued ' a certificate of achievement during the week of July 20-24. Norman Cox Heads New Real Estate and Insurance Dept, at Speedway Bank ~ rllj To offer the community experienced service in the rental and sale of real estate, property management, and insurance, the Speedway State Bank has set up a special department. Manager of the new department is Norman D. Cox. “For many years we have felt the need for these specialized services, here on the west side,” said S. P. Hunter, president of the bank. “The new department is available to every one whether or not he is a depositor at Speedway State Bank.”. Cox takes over as manager well qualified by a background of experience including three years in real estate sales and two years operating his own insurance agency. His schooling includes more than three years in the Butler University school of business. Cox is a charter member of the Speedway 500 Sertoma service club.
