Notice From State Fire Marshal Indiana resilents are urged by State Fire Marshal Jay L. Foster to thoroughly inspect their homes and properties during Spring Clean-Up Week as a preventative measure against fires. The state fire official pointed out that there are eight leading causes for fires on farms and in city homes. They are: 1. Defective chimneys. 2. Sparks on combustible roofs. 3. Inadequate lightning protection. 4. Carelessness with matches. 5. Spontaneous ignition. 6. Improper use of gasoline or kerosene. 7. Unsafe stove and furnace installations. 8. Misuse of electricity and appliances. “To this can be added large accumulations of papers, rags or rubbish, collected during the winter months,” Marshal Foster continued. “It might also be wise to inspect drains and downspouts to see if they are clear of leaves.” Mr. Foster asked Hoosiers to acquaint themselves with “self helps” in case a fire should break out. He recommended that residents write to the National Board of Fire Underwriters, 85 John St. New York 38, N. Y., for an informative booklet on “Your FireSafe Home.”
