RECEIVES PAINTING—The painting “Field Flowers,” by Evelynne Mess, is presented to Richard C. Jordan, superintendent of Speedway schools, by Psi lota Xi Sorority representatives. Mrs. Maurice A. King, president of Gamma Theta Chapter (left) and Mrs. Clarence H. Baker, philanthropic chairman, help Mr. Jordan hang the painting in the Art room of the new addition to Speedway High School. The painting is one of three purchases by the sorority from the Hoosier Art Salon.
Gamma Theta Chapter, which was established in 1948, with 17 members has grown to an active membership of 57. Their purpose of philanthropic enterprise has been carried out over the past 11 years in many cultural and charitable projects associated with our community. One of the main projects has been the purchase and maintainence of hospital equipment for use of residents of Speedway and vicinity. This equipment consisting of four hospital beds with mattresses, wheel chairs, commodes, crutches, a lift, walkers, and a bed side table is free of charge. It may be obtained by contacting Mrs. Edith Zink’s Market Each year sorority gives a scholarship of SIOO to a member of the current graduating class having the highest scholastic average and who plans to attend an Indiana college. They also sponsor at least one girl each year to attend Girls State.
The national Psi Ote organization has always been an advocate of speech and hearing projects. Our local chapter, in conduction with the three Indianapolis chapters, donates $250 each year to the Indianapolis Speech and Hearing Kindergarten. Members volunteer to assist in conducting hearing tests in the mobile unit throughout the city. Last year members gave S2OO to the Marion County Chapter of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation to aid research in the cause and cure of this disease which effects adults and children. . Other projects include monetary contributions to Hoosier Art Salon, Symphony Maintainence Fund, Mental Health and an annual Christmas cheer project. The money to support these philanthropies is made by members through various fund raising projects.
