In a medical test, 27 women applied estrogen cream to one side of the face and plain cream to the other side. There was no difference in the two sides of the face after daily use of the cream for three months. . - Material in MEDICAL MIRROR is based on various scientific publications and does not necessarily reflect the opinion of all doctors. Fifteen world airlines and one corporate customer have ordered 161 of the new transports. Of all the new turbine-powered transports due soon to revolutionize public air transportation, the Electra is the first four-engine airliner of American design and construction to be certified by the CAA. The Electra climaxed its certification program, in a 150-hour marathon in the sky. The new plane flew as much as 19 hours and 21 minutes in a single day in passing its “function and reliability” tests. Atomic Energy Reports At Library The Indianapolis Public Library is one of 14 public libraries in the United States to receive from the Atomic Energy Commission a collection of approximately 30,000 non-secret atomic energy reports. These reports are concerned with the basic research and technical developments of the United States Nuclear Program. They have been made available by the Atomic Energy Commission to aid the public and industry in obtaining authoritative up-to-date information on the problems and developments in the field. Both military and civilian literature is included. Among these are: Experimental medicine and the use of isotopes; the research and development of machinery to harness the atom for civilian power; the disposition of waste by-products from nuclear energy programs; the locating, processing, and refining of uranium and other basic metals; and engineering drawings, specifications, lists of materials, design criteria, and photographs which have application for industrial use. There are many other areas dealt with in this vast collection, and new materials arrive almost daily. Anyone may examine or study this reference collection in the Technical Department at Central Library.

Use of Plastic May Add To Acreage Under Cover Want to build a cheap greenhouse? John Wiebe of the Ontario, Canada, Horticultural Experiment Station at Vineland Station described at the recent Indiana University meeting of the American Institute of Biological Sciences the building of such a greenhouse of plastic film, its edges buried in the ground, and kept rigidly in place by uniform air pressure. “Since the cost of a balloon greenhouse is only a fraction of that of even the cheapest conventional greenhouse, it is possible that many acres of farm land will be covered in this manner in the future,” Wiebe predicted.
Com From Pera Helps Fight Fungus Disease Resistance to rust in field and sweet corn is being developed through breeding into hybrids a strain of com found only on the Cusco plain of Peru. Plant Physiologist James G. Dickson of the University of Wisconsin in a paper read at the recent meeting at Indiana University of the American Institute of Biological Sciences described research which has resulted in isolation of more than 100 strains of com fungus, a species which is constantly developing new varieties. This ability to grow new forms has enabled the fungus to overcome resistance in the complant host and cause heavy losses in both yield and quality. The problem of the plant physiologist has been to keep ahead of the fungus by developing new resistant strains. This is being done by breeding in the Peruvian variety of com.
