Butter Fruit Ever hear of “Butter fruit?” Most people call this fruit pears, but at one time they were nicknamed “Butter fruit” because of their soft, melting, juicy flesh. The Bartlett pear, which is available mainly from mid-July through mid-October, is most prevalent these days. And, unlike many fruits, the Bartlett pears are ripened off the tree for the best flavor and texture. Normally they are picked when mature, but in a hard stage. Therefore we purchase them when they often times need additional ripening. If the pears are not fully ripe they will ripen in the brown paper bag in which they were purchased or in some fairly tight container such as a cabinet drawer or cake box. 'A fairly humid place at about 60 to 70 degrees F. is best. Be sure to check them daily since some pears ripen faster than others. When the flesh feels slightly soft when gently pressed—the same way a ripe peach feels, they are ready for use

Another Fallacy blasted It simply isn’t true that foods high in carbohydrate damage one’s teeth. That foods high in starch do not bring about dental decay is demonstrated by dental health surveys made in several countries where the diet consists mainly of such foods. In Italy, where 70 per cent of calories are obtained from bread, spaghetti, and macaroni, a 60-year-old person can be expected to have as good teeth as a 13-year-old American child. In China and Japan where refined rice dominates the diet, dental decay is low.
