Enrollment for adult education night classes will be from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 9, in Room 116 of the high school. At this time it appears fairly certain that there will be classes in Beginning Clothing, Intermediate Clothing, Advance Clothing, Beginning Typing, Intermediate Typing, Shorthand, and Bookkeeping. However, teachers have not yet been named for all these courses. Classes will start the week of September 15. There must be a minimum of twelve in each class. Fees, which will be paid the first night the class meets, will be five dollars per class plus books and materials. Further information about classes will be available at enrollment time. BOY SCOUT NEWS The first troop committee meeting of the new year will be held Sunday, September 7, 2:00 p.m. at Harold Anthony’s home, 5558 Meadowood Dr. Any Scout Father interested in helping out the Scout Troop this year, is urged to attend. The first Scout meeting will be Tuesday, September 9, 7:00 p.m. at the Speedway Christian Church. This will be for all Explorers and Boy Scouts.
Westwood Plans Square Dancing Program Your Square Dance committee is looking forward to a very full schedule of happy dancing for everyone this season. If you have never square danced you are missing the enjoyment of meeting and being one of the most happy people in the nation. There are many thousands of people all over the country who square dance several nights a week and enjoying every minute of it There are special vacation square dance camps where dancers can go and dance their cares away, and believe me it’s better than beating your brains out fighting traffic to get several miles away only to return tired and worn out. You might be thinking what’s all this got to do with your club, well here goes—the square dance lessons are starting September 9th. Johnny Wykoff will be teachings the class. Psi lota Xi Our first meeting of the year is always an important one, so our new officers would like everyone to make a special effort to attend this business meeting Sept. 11th. It will be at the home of Gladys Messenger, 2309 Allison St. Clare Kryter and Barbara Sullivan will be the hostesses. This year marks the Tenth Birthday of Gamma Theta Chapter. For this special occasion, we will have a Birthday Party in Honor of our Charter Members with a pitch-in dinner at the home of Fritz Foland on Sept. 25th. Hostesses for this meeting will be Aileen Douglas, Bernice Robbins, June Baker, and Emistine Neat. Joanna King, president Jo Messick, publicity Indianapolis Hiking Club The Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary is the site scheduled for the Indianapolis Hiking Club on Sunday, September 7. Hikers will meet at 1:00 p.m., on the east side of the State House and proceed via Road 52 to Rushville (42 miles) where they will meet again at the north side of the court house, and then travel approximately 12 miles farther to the Bird Sanctuary. CORK-BIRK Miss Joselynn Jan Cork will become Mrs. Henry Andrew Birk in a double-ring wedding ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, September 7, at the Speedway Christian Church. The Rev. Ray Montgomery will hear the vows. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold O. Cork, 1725 W. Oles Drive. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Birk, 6115 E. St Joseph. Miss Avis Belcher will be the maid of honor, and bridesmaids will be Mrs. Donald Pirtle, Miss Marilyn Woodward, Miss JoAnn Kixmiller, and Miss Mary Jane Porter of Martinsville. Mr. William Record of Martinsville will serve as best man. Guests will be seated by John Schutt, Jim Birk, brother of the groom, Joe Cork, and Jay Cork, brothers of the bride. Candy Marshall will be flower girl and ring bearer will be Jes Cork, brother of the bride. Miss Cork is a graduate of I.U. and a member of Sigma Kappa sorority. American Legion News Speedway Post 198 Charles Davis, Jr., 2603 Lafayette Road, an alumnus of Speedway High School, and Harry C. JBayne, 5550 W.2sth recently joined Speedway Post. They were among the 19 new members signed up for the 1959 membership year which has just begun. Post Membership Chairman Jim Miller reported at the last Post meeting that the goal ior new members is 46, which would break the all-time record of 209 when added to present member’s renewals. Mr. Miller said that his committee is working hard to find veterans, especially Speedway veterans, who will be good members. He added that increased social activities for the Legionnaire, his wife and his family are expected to draw eligible veterans into the ranks of the Legion. The first golf tournament ever sponsored by Speedway Post will be held September 20 at South Grove. All Legionnaires of the 47 Marion County Posts have been invited to participate. Guests of Legionnaires are also invited to play. To enter this Banker’s Handicap tournament, call Paul Lewis, FLeetwood 7-4790. The newly organized Color Guard will present the colors before each football game at the S.H.S. gridiron. All Legionnaires are urged to support the Sparkplugs by attending these games.

Patricia Kuczenski Miss Patricia Kuczenski, 2343 Fisher, 1958 Speedway High School graduate, has been awarded a scholarship to the Royal Beauty Academy, 401 Roosevelt Bldg., Indianapolis. Miss Kuczenski was recommended by the principal for this scholarship.
Seniors Notice The annual and final wienerroast for the present Senior class will be held this Saturday, September 6th; at 6:30 p.m. at 5040 West 15th Street. The parents of the seniors are taking care of the expense this year, so there will be no cost to the students. Then seniors were requested to register at school whether they intend to attend. If you failed to sign up and find that you are able to go, please call CHapel 1-7778 right away. This will be the last wiener-roast for this class, so we wouldn’t want anyone left out. The wiener-roast will be confined to the seniors, but you may take a guest to the dance to be held at the C. 1.0. Fashion Show Card Party The 10th Annual Fashion Show Card Party of the Pilot Club of Indianapolis, Business and Professional Service Club will be held at the Indiana Roof Sept 17th, Wednesday, at 7:30. This is the only money making project and their proceeds go to the Library School 9, Noble School, Central Hospital and other Civic Projects. Block’s are giving the Fashion Show. Hobby Hunters The Hobby Hunters will have their first meeting of the season at the home of Vanda Linville, 1902 Fisher, at 7:00 p.m., Sept 4th. Sue Dillon will assist the hostess. TOWN TOPICS Improvements to Georgetown Road Bridge are under way. The improvemeats as allowed by the Flood Control Commission of Indiana, are only temporary pending the execution of plans proposed by the Metropolitan Planning Department If these plans become a reality Georgetown Road will become a part of a thoroughfare connecting Road 67 and Road 52. GOLF All Speedway residents are invited to take part in the First Annual Golf Tournament, sponsored by Speedway American Legion Post 198. The place is South Grove, the time, Saturday, September 20th at 10:00 a.m. The entry fee is $3, which includes green fees, prizes and refreshments. There will be low gross trophies, many bankers handicap prizes, a long drive and a closest to the hole prize. Westwood Country Club News The annual swim team dinner tor the swim team and their immediate families will be held at the Westwood Country Club, at 5:30 p.m., Sunday, September 14th. The officers of the club and the Board of Directors will be special guests. There will be 107 swim team members receive awards that night, an increase of 72 over 1957 when the team numbered 35 members. The swim team scored 77 points in the annual City Swim Meet Tom Geiman won the Morrison Trophy as the outstanding 8 and under boys swimmer in Indianapolis. Dick Jacks won the City Championship in the 50 meter Breast for boys 11 and 12.
