Indiana State Checker Tournament Indiana Checker Players, it’s your move! The 1958 Indiana State Checker Tournament will be held this year at the Indianapolis YMCA Checker Club on the Labor Day Weekend of August 30th, 31st, and September Ist A short business meeting will be held at 10:30 on Saturday, August 30th, and play will start at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with the competition lasting., until Monday, September Ist Mr. J. R. Stevenson, head of the Indianapolis YMCA Checker Club and State President, will preside at the session.
The American Checker Federation is planning an active program for the expert as well as for the average player. The World Champion Checker Player, Dr. Marion F. Tinsley, has just returned from Great Britain where he beat the English Champion 9 games to 1 in a 40 game match. The National Tournament has just been completed and Walter Heilman, new campion, beat Newell W. Banks in the finals, 2 games and 3 draws. Those of us who were able to watch the TV program, “The Chapel Door,” last week at 8:00 a.m. were very proud of our minister, Dr. Montgomery, and the girls who sang—Charlene Musgrave, Nancy Lewis, Nanette Fidger and Marcia Edwards. They did a splendid job and it was good to have our church so ably represented. DORCAS CIRCLE will meet Tuesday, September 2nd, at 7:30 p.m. with Mrs. Richard Lindamood, 4944 W. 14th Street She will be assisted by Mrs. Walter Dugger. Mrs. Samuel Parke will give devotions and Dr. Montgomery will speak on “Why Study Missions?” KEZIA CIRCLE will meet Tuesday, September 2nd, at 7:30 p.m. in the Singletons Room at the church. Janet Volmer will give devotions and Mr. Clayton Brown will be guest speaker and will show pictures of Alaska. Mr. Brown has been in Alaska. EVENING CIRCLE will meet Tuesday, September 2nd, at 7:45 p.m. with Lela Fletcher, 5244 W. 14th St. She will be assisted by Winnie Briggs and Blanche King. Nona Burdge will give devotions and the program, “Jamaica and Puerto Rico” will be presented by Eunice Elder, Elva Harvey and Alice Templin. EDUCATIONAL COMMITTEE will meet Wednesday, September 3rd, at 7:00 p.m. in the Junior Hi Room. All departmental superintendents are invited. CHOIR REHEARSALS. Wednesday, September 3rd. The Men’s Chorus will rehearse at 7:00 p.m. and the Chancel Choir at 8:00 p.m. After the rehearsals, there will be a reception for new choir members. SPEEDWAY CHRISTIAN WEEKLY. The publication of the Weekly will be resumed next week, after a two month’s vacation. We hope you are all looking forward to this Fall edition and if your address has been changed, please advise us. BACK TO COLLEGE SUNDAY, September 7th. Our college youth will be honored at both services on this day. In order that no one will be overlooked please see that the church office is advised of your name, school, etc., so that we may have it for our church bulletin. TEACHERS TRAINING CLASS. If you are interested in teaching in our church school, please register for the Training Class which will begin September 21st and continue through December 14th. The class will be held during the second worship service (11:00 a.m.) and “Jesus and His Teachings” will be studied. Will you please call Rev. Graves regarding enrollment? NEW MEMBERS.
