Catholic Youth Draw Up Their Own Code Of Conduct At the C.Y.O. Archdiocesan Convention last Friday and Saturday at Marian College, scores of Junior and Senior CYO members from all parts of the Archdiocese met, drew up and adopted the following Code of Conduct, which could well be followed by any parent and in part, at least, "by any youth whether Catholic •or not and by any parent, whether Catholic or not to the good of the community and the whole world. Code Of Conduct I hereby profess that I am a Child of God and a citizen of the "United States of America; therefore, I pledge myself to keep the laws of God and the Laws of the "United States of America and of the sovereign Commonwealth of Indiana. Furthermore, I declare that the most important thing for me is my Supernatural Life of Grace bestowed and nourished by the Sacraments; The second important thing for me is my education, that is the development of my mind, character, and skills for the service of God and my country; The third important thing for me is my social life—my ability to live peacefully, justly, and charitably with all others. WHEREFORE, I RESOLVE: 1. To be faithful to all -my spiritual and religious duties.
2. To receive the Sacraments regularly and frequently; namely Holy Communion at least once a week, and Penance at least once or twice a month. 3. I will have and outwardly show proper respect to all lawful authority, especially my Parents. And I will contribute my share to the welfare of the home. 4. To apply myself diligently to the difficult tasks of education: a) by keeping the rules and regulations of the school I attend; b) by being faithful about assignments, both written matter and pure study work: Meaning at least one hour work outside of school time for each school day; c) by choosing a limited number of extra-curricular activities and supporting these with all my ability—but never to the detriment of my Spiritual Life or studies. 5. I will always use language becoming to a Christian gentleman or lady, namely I will always respect the name of God. I will never curse nor use vulgarities. 6. I will read only good literature and carefully avoid anything I would be ashamed to show my parents or parish priest. 7. To enjoy and help others enjoy good clean fun in my social life: a) by remembering that I have something by way of personality to offer in any social group or gathering; b) by seeking, not so much my own entertainment, but how I can
help others really have a good time; c) by keeping the following rules as to dating, drinking, places and types of entertainment, and the hours devoted to such: 1) I will not go steady (in any meaning of that term) until such time as I, with the approval of my parents, can reasonably look forward to marriage within one or two years. 2) During school sessions I will have no more than one or two “date” a week, and these only with the approval of my parents. 3) I will always keep my parents informed as to where I am, with whom I am and at what time I can be expected home. 4) I will never drink alcoholic beverage illegally; I will never drink it on a date or other teenage social affairs; and, if I drink it at all, it will be only at home with the approval of and in company with my parents. Nor will I date or socialize with teen-agers
who do otherwise. 5) I will frequent only such places of amusement as are approved by my parents and which are also of undoubted good reputation. I will avoid all movies that are not listed as Class “A” A-I and A-II by the Legion of Decency. I will have the Christian character and courage to depart immediately from any entertainment that is not morally good. 6) I will plan my entertainment so as to be with no less than three other persons of good character; and I will avoid being alone with a date in a secluded spot such as a parked car—even at a drive-in theater.
7) The hours of my social entertainment will be set by my parents: The ordinary hour of return home should never be later than 12 Midnight; but exception should be made for “rare” special occasions, but even the biggest social affair should never keep us out past 1:00 a.m. with the exception of the discretion of school office and my parents. 8) For every social affair I will dress neatly and modestly as a gentleman or young lady. 9) My conduct on a date, or otherwise in the presence of the opposite sex will be governed by Christian principles of modesty and purity, maintaining a general “hands-off” policy. r *7 10) I will have respect for the property of others, including public property and other common facilities such as Church property, etc.; meaning that I will never wilfully damage such property, nor appropriate it as my own, not even as a souvenir. 11) When driving an automobile I will keep all speed limits and other laws; and I will avoid any activity within the car that might hinder safe driving. 12) As a passenger in an automobile I will do nothing to hinder good driving, and especially will never encourage nor suggest anything other than good driving.
