Teenage Traffic Safety Conference Delegates to Governor Handley’s Teen-Age Traffic Safety Conference, in Indianapolis, came forth with a number of recommendations for the promotion of traffic safety in Indiana. Some of the suggestions dealt specifically with the teen-age' driver, others were designed to assist the safety movement on an over-all basis. The 300 high school students, from all over the state, heard Governor Handley stress the necessity for greater respon-

They urged that these groups use such programs as “Operation Live Longer,” a yearround traffic safety program designed by the Indiana Office of Traffic Safety, as a basis for their action. pealed to school authorities to provide for county-wide teen-age safety organizations to insure the continuance of the annual safety conference as well as a continuing teen-age traffic safety program. Other recommendations were: 1. Driver education, which meets or exceeds state standards, berequired for all students. 2. Stricter enforcement of all traffic laws by all branches of law
enforcement, prosecutors and judges of all courts. 3. Strengthening of the Indiana Point System. 4. Stronger enforcement action and penalties against drunken driving. 5. Increased emphasis upon the importance of “attitude” and other psychological factors of driving in traffic safety programs. 6. The formation of junior driving clubs for the dual purpose of creating better mechanical driving practices and greater acceptance of individual responsibility for preventing accidents. 7. Urged the present driver examination program be strengthened to more effectively identify and improve poor drivers. 8. That state officials investigate the need for legislation, setting minimum as well as maximum speed limits. 9. The adoption of a ‘‘careless driving” law. _ 10. The adoption of a device for determining muffler-noise violations. While the group recognized that traffic safety is basically a responsibility of the driver, they favored continuance of engineering improvements of both cars and roads. The Conference was sponsored by the Office of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Wilbur Young, and was organized by C. Wesley Dane, Director of the Division of School Traffic Safety Education, with the assistance of other state and citizen groups. Red Cress Steps Up Home Nursing Program The Indianapolis Chapter Red Cross is stepping up its program of teaching “Care of the Sick and Injured” classes in order to prepare more women to give good nursing care to victims of the Asian flu, should the epidemic hit Indianapolis and Marion County. The program is being accelerated at the request of the national and state health officials. The Red Cross courses in “Care of the Sick and Injured” teach housewives 32 simple nursing techniques which are extremely helpful in earing for flu patients and also those with other types of illnesses. The Asian flu in itself is not dangerous. However, the complications which may develop, such as pneumonia, may be very dangerous.
