Short Supply Of Oxygen Enas January Ist will mark the first time since the beginning of World War II the nation's oxygen production will exceed industry’s immediate demand for this vital commodity, it was announced today by W. M. Haile, President of Linde Company, Division of Union Carbide Corporation. By that date, Linde’s newly expanded liquid producing plants in Ashtabula, Ohio, and Fontana, California, will go “on-stream” to delivar an added monthly out put of Sbme 150,000000 cubic feet of oxygen. Although a great quantity of this new supply has been claimed by industry, enough remains to provide customers with even more efficient service. New facilities art Ashtabula, Ohio, will provide 115,000,000 cubic feet of oxygen each month for industrial use in the Alleghany steel belt and Lower Michigan areas. Liquefied oxygen, shipped at approximately -300 o F., is transported to users through

Fontana expansion will deliver 35,000,000 more cubic feet monthly for use throughout the West Coast Present growth of the West’s chemicals and steel industries points to peak demands for oxygen over the next 15 years. To meet future conditions, Linde plans to further expand its Fontana output by some 430 tons of gaseous oxygen in mid-1958. In 1957, on a nation-wide average, 200 cubic feet of oxygen were used to process each ingot ton of steel produced. However, the new oxygen steelmaking processes are predicted to boost this average to 300

In addition, chemicals firms are now using processes requiring quantities of oxygen in laboratories and pilot plants. Large consumers of oxygen have been turning more and more to the use of Linda “on-site” plants—plants producing from ten to hundreds of tons of gaseous oxygen a day, some with associated facilities for liquid oxygen production and storage. These installations provide an uninterrupted supply, at a guaranteed price.
