•Strokes Q. Is there any difference between a stroke and apoplexy? A. No. The term “stroke” is a popular term for ‘'apoplexy” or “apoplectic stroke.” Q. Are strokes always due io brain hemorrhage or bleedings? A. No. A stroke results when the blood supply to some part of the brain suddenly stops. This can occur when a brain vessel ruptures or when a brain blood channel becomes blocked. Q. Does a person ever completely recover from a stroke? A. The damaging effects of a stroke depends on how much and what part of the brain is affected. Doctors say it is possible to have a little stroke with hardly more ill effects than a temporary sensation of not feeling up to par. Real trouble shows up when the more vital parts of the brain are involved. For example, if the speech area is damaged the victim has trouble talking. Injury to other areas of the brain may affect memory or cause some paralysis of the arm and leg. Q. What area of the brain is affected when a person has trouble talking following a stroke? A. The brain area necessary for speech lis shown as a shaded area in the above drawing.

SPEECH AREA Q. Is one stroke likely to bo followed by others? A Strokes may occur quite often over a period of years or the second attack may not show up for a decade or more. Many people who have repeated little strokes are not aware that each is a step down the ladder but the family may notice some change in personality. As the brain becomes more and more damaged by one little stroke after another the previously pleasant, wellgroomed person may become dull or perhaps bad-tempered, careless of dress, and depress-
