Members of the Altar Society are asked to assemble in the social room ten minutes before the eight o’clock Mass ■Sunday morning and march in a body into the church. Front pews will be reserved for the ladies. Bach lady should make every effort to receive Holy Communion with her Society on the first Sunday every month, thereby gaining many extra graces for herself. Mrs. Agnes Benedetto, president, not only invites but urges each member, whether new or old, to receive Holy Communion together. The Society who receives Holy Communion and prays together stays together. Mesdames Seßita Lux and Ann Maitich are co-chairmen hostesses for the Attar Society meeting next Wednesday evening, January 8, at 8 o’clock in the social room. The movie “Miracle of Marcelino” at the Ritz Theatre in Indianapolis will continue through Saturday, January 4th. Prices for adults are 75c afternoons, and 90c evenings. Price for children is 35c any performance. The feature picture is shown at 1:30, 3:30, 5:30, 7:30 and 9:30. Tickets bought at the window of the theatre do not help the schools. Sister Julia has been receiving the Cobalt treatments at St. Francis hospital. The Junior CYOs of St. Christopher enjoyed their Christmas party Sunday evening in the social room. Saturday evening, January 11, the Marhoefer Music Mart will sponsor a dance in St. Christopher social room from 8 to 11 lor the Junior CYO. All West Side Junior CYOs are invited. Bob Morrison will be the disc jockey. Refreshments will be served and records will be given away as prizes. Admission for each boy or girl one label or wrapper from some Marhoefer product—no money. Mental Health “Our Mental Health Climate: A Mid-Century Inquiry” will be the subject of a series of pubHc meetings, sponsored by the Marion County Association for Mental Health in the spring, according to an announcement by Ross G. Kitchen, president. Five programs have been scheduled between February 10 and April 7. Their purpose wiH be to evaluate various factors which promote the mental health of the community, among them industry, schools and churcheg, Alexander Moore, principel of Crispus Attucks High School, is chairman of the committee in charge of planning this public forum. Also on the committee are Virgil Hunt, director of Indiana University Extension; Canon Frank Carthy, director of Christian Social Service of the Episcopal Church; James Miner, Assistant U. S. Attorney; Prof. William L. Howard, Butler University; Robert V. SuHivan, president of the Indianapolis Industrial Union Council, C. 1.0.; Mrs. Frank FairchHd, executive director of .the Indianapolis Day Nursery Association, and Mrs. Mack H. McCormick. GIRL SCOUT NEWS Girl Scout Troop No. 755 enjoyed a Christmas party on Thursday, December 19 at the home of Mrs. James Owen. She was assisted by Mrs. David Morris, Mrs. Jesse Smith and Mrs. Frank AsdeH. The mothers were guests of their daughters. The evening was spent playing Bingo and we had a gift exchange. There has been a considerable amount of newspaper publicity recently about high school courses and the preparation of high school students for college classes. Speedway parents may wonder how well local high school graduates succeed in college courses. Each year at the end of the first college semester the grades of freshmen who graduated from Speedway High School the previous year are obtained and studied. The importance of high school training is probably most vital in the first semester of college, since after that college courses usually go far beyond what is offered in high school. The grades of present college freshmen who graduated from Speedway High School.in May, 1957, are not yet available. When they are, a report concerning them will be made in this column. We do have the first semester college grades of the sixty-one graduates in 1956. The thirty-five who enrolled in college ranked from Ist to 57th scholastically. Two of the thirty-five withdrew from college before the end of the first semester; however, every student who was in the upper three-fourths of the high school class made all passing grades in (Continued on page 5) Card of Thanks May I thank all the many friends and neighbors, the members of the Psi lota Xi sorority and members of the Lioness Club for all the lovely cards, flowers and gifts sent to me during my long illness. Christmas Decoratton vontGSt w inners The Speedway Junior Chamber of Commerce has announced the winners of the Christmas Decoration Contest First prize of $25.00 was awarded to James Kellam, 5434 Maplewood Drive. Second prize of $15.00 went to A. R. Davis, 5006 W. 22nd St The SIO.OO third place prize went to M. W. Cochran, 1876 Norfolk St Houses given honorable mention were: 5874 Speedway Dr., 1057 Allison, 1622 Presto, 1652 Allison, 1738 Gerrard, 1686 Whitcomb. Judges for the contest were: Glenn Collins, Town Marshall; Richard Hissam, Main Drugs; and Joe Gibson, Allison Div. This year an award was'given to the best decorated business and it was won by the Speedway State Bank. All Speedway residents can be justly proud of the decorations. Judging was very difficult due to the great number of homes that were decorated.
The Speedway Jaycees want to thank all the people who decorated their homes and helped make this contest a success and made Speedway a beautifully decorated community. We also want to thank all those who purchased Christmas lights and decorations from us in our Christmas Lights Sales Program held in conjunction with the decoration contest. Thanks also to the Speedway Businessmen’s Assn, for their contribution of prize money. Without their help this contest would not have been the success it was. The Jaycee Committee members for this contest were Bill Harrison, Chairman; Jack Gilbert and Bill Busard.

Falender, builder of the new homes in Meadowood, sponsored a contest for the best lighting and decoration among the more than 200 homes now completed in this community in the* forthwest section of Speed-
way. This contest was in addition to tho < contest sponsored by the Speedway Jaycee’s for the entire town of Speedway. Judging for this contest was conducted separately from the regular contest by a judging committee of members of the Speedway Jaycee’s. Because of the interest shown in the community and the many excellent lighting arrangements, Mr. Falender awarded both a Ist and 2nd prize. First place award winners were Mr. and Mrs. James L. . Speedway Giri Wins Medal Candy Walker won first place medal in the seven and eight year old beginners class and second ptace trophy in advanced eight year olds in an official U.S.TA. twirling contest held at Elkhart, Indiana, December 21. Candy is a second grade pupil at Speedway School 1 and is a member of the United States Twirling Association.
