Hints On Health SPINAL CORD INJURIES Spinal cord injuries call for the utmost care in moving the victim. So delicate is this part of the central nervous system that, if there is any damage to it, as in an accident, bending the spine will not only add to the injury, but may cause instant death. The spinal cord is lodged within the spinal cavity. The spine consists of a number of separate bones known as vertebrae, each having a vertical opening through the center. These bones, one above the other, form a continuous series of spaces, through which the spinal cord extends, connecting at the top with the brain. Nerves branch off from both the brain and spinal cord and pass out through openings to various parts of the body. With the increasing number of automobile accidents, spinal cord injuries are becoming more and more frequent. If there is the least suspicion of a spinal cord injury the patient should not be moved hastily. Should he be conscious, a spinal cord injury can be readily diagnosed when the person finds he is unable to feel or move his arms or legs. If an unconscious accident victim moves his arms and legs spontaneously, there is little likelihood of his having received a spinal cord injury. Extreme care should be used in all such suspected injuries. The person with such an injury should be kept in a flat position, preferably on his back or stomach, if he is found in such a position. A person even suspected of having a spinal cord injury should be transported in an ambulance. DON'T FORGET! LIONESS MEETING HELP WELCOME THOSE YOU HAVEN'T MET

You don’t have to go as far as Dennis The Menace to help employ the handicapped. But you can help by sending your discarded clothing to Goodwill Industries. Goodwill Industries can use anything made of cloth, clothing helps most. Some ten years ago, by an Act of the United States Congress, the first full week in'October was set aside as National Employ The Physically Handicapped Week. housekeeping equipment in thousands of homes, »according to Howard G. Lytle, Executive Director of Indianapolis Goodwill Industries. He suggests calling MElrose 6-2541 for a free Goodwill bag in which to store the family’s discarded clothing, shoes, hats, toys and other items. When a bag is filled, call MElrose 6-2541 for pickup service and save closet space. Discards become time cards for handicapped men and women at Goodwill Industries, Mr. Lytle pointed out. Goodwill trucks stop only on request.
