SPEEDWAY BANK (Continued from Page 1) the Speedway State Bank has assigned a “sorting number” to each checking account. Each customer’s checks and deposit slips are imprinted with this sorting number as well as his name and address. The sorting number also protects the customer from mixups between his account and others of like or similar names. A system of assigning sorting numbers is used by which all accounts are kept in alphabetical order as well as numerical sequence at the same time. Known as an “alpha-numeric” system, it provides for the adding of new accounts bothin alphabetical and numerical order at one and the same time. Comes time to post the day’s checks to the accounts, the bookkeeper has her checks in front of her— in alphabetical and numerical order. The sorting has been done numerically in about a third the time it would have taken to sort by name. She picks up from the file the first ledger sheet and .puts it into the Post-Tronic machine. Post-Tronic is versatile, it locates the sheet properly for the first entry of the day. With the ol£ style machine this is a tedious »/?hore which the bookkeeper has to do—like lining up a letter in a typewriter. The sorting number is then punched on a set of keys. If the wrong ledger sheet is in the machine, it is rejected, eliminating one possible bookkeeping mistake which occurs just often enough to make bookkeepers prematurely gray. Next the machine automatically picks up the balance in the account of each check and deposit is- then entered by the operator in much the same way you punch the keys on an adding machine. When all entries have been made, a “sign-off ’ button is pressed. Post-Tronic then prints all entries and the new balance on the sheet and “kicks” it out, ready for the next ledger sheet. As Keller put it, “Whenever speed and accuracy are increased at the same time, economy natur--1 ally follows. But when this can be done and at the same time make life easier for the employees, you’ve really got something.” He estimates the three new machines will pay for themselves in about 24 months to say nothing of the good will created with customers by eliminating mistakes in their accounts.
