Turbo liner First Flight Begins Extensive Test Program for Prop-Jet The engines and propellers winch will power America’s first prop-jet commercial transport, the Lockheed Electra, are now flying in the Allison Turbo-Liner, it was announced today. Consisting of the Allison 501Dl3 Prop-Jet engine and Aeroproducts 606 propeller, this matched team is underway cm' a flight test program which will reach thousands of hours under every conceivable condition before the Electra goes into service late in 1958. The Turbo-Liner is a converted twin-engine commercial airliner which Allison uses for flight test of prop-jet engines and propellers. Pilots for the first flight of the Turbo-Liner with the new power packages were R. F. Petercheff and A. L. Talmadge, Allison test pilots. Although the first flight was for operational check-out of the new engine-propeller combination and no maximum performance efforts were made, both pilots were highly enthusiastic about the flight. / Veterans of several hundred hours of Turbo-Liner flying, Mr. Petercheff declared that take-off thrust with the four-bladed Aeroproducts propeller is much improved over previous models. “We broke ground about 1600 feet from the start of roll and soon after take-off we were indicating a 5000 feet per minute rate of climb,” he added. “This is much better than we previously experienced with the three-blad-ed propellers.” “A locked throttle climb was then made to 10,000 feet with the engine and propeller performing beautifully and maintaining 100 per cent RPM, with perfect governing and coordination. Without attempting a speed dash, we leveled out and cruised at 350 miles an hour true air speed,” Mr. Petercheff continued. “Later we climbed to 35,000 feet, an altitude which standard Canvair airliners cannot obtain, and performance of the Turbo-Liner was right up to full expectation.” Mr. Petercheff said landing approaches were made at various speeds from 130 to 150 miles per hour but even at the maximum landing speed, by use of full propeller reverse, stops were made in less than 1800 feet from touchdown. “The Lockheed Electra, with four of these new power plants, Will really be a performing airplane and do things that no other airplane, then or now, can approach,” added co-pilot Talmadge. “The combination of take-off and landing characteristics, plus speed in the air and payload, give the prop-jet airliners a long time career in commercial aviation.” An extensive flight test program has been laid out for the Turbo-Liner at the Allison Flight Test Facility at Weir Cook Airport in Indianapolis. This will include maximum performance in speed, altitude and rate of climb as well as noise and vibration evaluations.
This information will become part of the extensive test program being conducted prior to first flight of the Electra early in 1958. Next test airplane to take the air with Allison 501-Dl3 engines and Aeroproducts 606 propellers will be a converted Lockheed Constellation at Burbank, Calif., which will undertake a 1000 hour flight program under airline operating conditions. Another Lockheed plane, a fourengine Constellation known throughout the aviation industry as “Old 1961 Flying Test Bed,” currently is flying with an Electra power package mounted outboard on the right wing engine position and three piston engines in the other positions. Also scheduled for the Electra flight test program by Allison in Indianapolis is a Convair twinengine YC-131C with the commercial engine-propeller combination and during 1958 Lockheed will deliver an Electra purchased by Allison for an accelerated flight test program by Allison test pilots.
