TELEPHONE SERVICE IN INDIANA Indiana’s nine largest cities have more telephones than all of China and India combined. And at the outset of 1956 there were 101 million telephones in the world, according to “The World’s Telephones,” an annual survey released today by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company. The nine Hoosier cities are Anderson, East Chicago, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Gary, Indianapolis, Muncie, South Bend and Terre Haute. There were almost 626,000 telephones in operation in the nine cities at the beginning of 1956, the annual survey shows. The total for China and India at that time was 521,000.

Five of the nine Hoosier cities are served by Indiana Bell, which is one of the 4,700 private companies serving the nation’s telephones. Russia’s “Iron Curtain” again blacked out telephone statistics for the U.S.SH. The last report (1936)' showed that the Soviet total was only 861,181. The two most talkative telephone spots on lhe globe are U.S. territories—Hawaii and Alaska. Hawaiians out-talked the rest of the world with 647 conversations per capita during 1955. Alaska was second with 572. For the fourth successive year Canada averaged more telephone conversations per person (446) than did the United States, which had 409. Iceland, as usual, ranked high on the conversation list with

The United States headed this list with 33.7 telephones per 100 popultion, or about one phone for every three persons. Sweden, which for many years has been second only to the United States, was next with 30.4 per 100 population. Hawaii ranked third with 29 and Canada wasforth with 26.3.
