TRAFFIC STATISTICS Statistics show that the weekend is the most dangerous time to drive. 41 per cent of the traffic deaths in 1955 occurred over weekends. Auto accidents in which drivers under 25 are involved are more apt to result in death than accidents in which drivers are over 25, Allstate Safety Crusade figures disclose. Greatest cause of pedestrian deaths is jaywalking. Nearly one-fourth of all traffic accidents occur on Saturdays. More than 43 per cent of all fatal traffic accidents in 1955 were due to excessive speed. Because we are such a highly motorized society. President Calvin Fentress, Jr., of Allstate Insurance Company has predicted that high school courses in safe driving ultimately will become necessary for graduation. . \ More pedestrians were injured in 1955 walking with traffic signals than were injured walking against traffic signals. Two employees of the U. S. Naval Avionics Facility, formerly the Naval Ordnance Plant, are shown giving blood to save ths lives of veterans at the West 10th Street Veterans Hospital at a Mood operation in the plant. Donors were recruited by the Red Cross. Mrs. E. T. the correct mental attitude coupled with driving knowledge, according to Edward R. Klamm, accident prevention director of Allstate Insurance Company. Traffic accidents don’t “just happen.” More than 80 per cent of all casualties occur in connection with some driving violation, Allstate Safety Crusade figures reveal. Allow one car’s length between your car and the car ahead for each 10 miles of speed to provide sufficient stopping distance in case of emergency. 98 per cent of last year’s fatal accidents involved motorists who had at least one year’s driving experience. Don’t back into an accident. If possible, leave alleys, driveways and parking places front end first. If you must back out, check traffic carefully. Always alight from an auto on the curb side, whether you’re a driver or a passenger. On long trips shift your gaze occasionally to avoid “highway hypnosis” that can dull your sense of speed.
